When my son started seventh grade, I began homeschooling. My college studies have been in a variety of fields with the most concentration in the arts and social sciences. At the University Center for Developmental Disabilities I have gained one-on-one experience with children with autism and have learned and employed several techniques used in the Operant Conditioning model. As a Teacher Assistant, I have the responsibilities of setting goals, creating objectives for weekly sessions, and tracking and recording weekly progress. I am a very one on one type of person. I want to make sure the child understands on their level of thinking, which might mean using what they use on a daily basis to explain clearer. I love working with elementary children and seeing their faces light up when they grasp a new concept. I am patient and understanding of each individual's learning pace and enjoy an interactive approach to learning. I have had the great opportunity to work with a special needs child as well as mainstream students which has given me the skills to be able cater to the needs of both.
I have a BA in History and am pursuing a teaching credential in elementary education. I work as a instructional aide to an autistic boy in a mainstream first grade classroom. In addition to assisting him in all his classwork I also help all the other students in all elementary subjects. We do language arts, reading, math, science, and social studies lessons everyday and I am very comfortable helping children understand all of these subjects.
