More About This Tutor...

My style of teaching really depends on the student and his/her learning style. Different students learn in different ways. I believe it is my responsibility to find which style works best for the student(s).
First teaching job was in a school for severely autistic children. After being there for a year I taught in a residential home for boys. This was challenging but probably one of my favorite jobs as a teacher. Because of the distance from home to work (about 1-1/2 hrs.), I applied at an urban school 20 minutes from my home. My first job there was managing the Young Parents Program. This was a program for high school girls who were pregnant or had already had a child. This program allowed the young girls to attend school. Due to budget restrictions it was cut. I was offered a position as a special education teacher in the high school. I have been doing that for the pas ... read more

My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : I am not classroom trained in this field, nor do i have a psychology degree, and i cant prescribe any medicine. i am twenty years old and have been living with adhd since i was born. I know what it feels like and have trained myself to focus and fit in to society, and i know what its like and the best ways to overcome it and have a positive outlook. i just wish when i was a kid i had someone who had known what it was like, instead of Doctors, taking their best guess at what i feel like

i am just a twenty year old college student, Who has learned a lot in this world, and looking to pass it on to whomever it might effect. Very caring, musical, and a great people person. I have mostly learned all my people skills when i was a waiter at T.G.I. Fridays, and that combined with my love of learning brings me to this tutor position
I have always been a hands on learner, so that is mostly the way i portray my lessons, by doing, instead of readin. However i also see the need in having to sit down and Get to work, because some thing are better learned on paper

I believe that children have different learning styles but they all benefit from positive encouragement from their teachers. I am patient and easy going and I enjoy helping a student reach their fullest potential. It is rewarding for both myself and the child and I feel such positive interactions can make a difference in their learning experience.
I am a recent graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University with a BA in History and Social Sciences and a total GPA of 3.57. I have worked with children most of my life and have many years of experience with them, including independently tutoring two elementary students in the early 1990s. I spent two years as a substitute teacher for primarily Groton Public Schools but also Norwich and Waterford Public Schools. I am very good at teaching the foundational basics that an elementary student must know to continue on to success in later years of schooling.
I consider my style to be firm but loving. Children know what to expect from me because I'm consistent. I have high expectations of students and they have never yet disappointed me. My teaching hero was Jaime Escalante who taught poor, struggling, barrio students in Los Angeles college level mathematics in the 1980s. One of his beliefs that resonated strongly with me was "Students will rise to the level of expectation." I am passionate about teachin ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In my four years as a professional tutor at the University of Evansville writing center, I focused on improving all aspects of a well-written essay, including the researching process. I have a vast knowledge of the MLS, APA, and AP styles and have honed my grammar skills during my three years as a sports editor. Learning is a team effort. I believe my experience as a Division I cross country runner has endowed me with a team mentality I use each time I tutor a student. Establishing a team setting reassures those I tutor that we will work together to achieve every goal we set. I truly enjoy working with children, and I welcome the challenge of working with students who struggle with reading. I regard reading skills as the key to success in the educational process, and I believe that given the proper encouragement, all students can achieve success in this area. I strive to be a catalyst in their success.
For the past fifteen years, I have pursued my aims in the field of higher education. Most of my teaching experience has focused on children with special needs; however while studying at St. Joseph's College, I was particularly attracted to the subject of Reading. Immediately after receiving the Master's degree, I enrolled in the Six-year program in Reading at the University of Connecticut.

I feel children are very self-aware and are very vulnerable to positive and negative feedback. Therefore, no matter how little progress is made, praise them. If no progerss is made or if an issue needs to re-addressed, praise them..."That was great, but let's try it this way!" I feel that you are positive, smiling, and they believe that you believe in them, 9 out of 10 kids will follow you!
I was more of an instructor than a teacher. I was a day camp counselor at Solway House parent/child resort in Saugerties N.Y. I instructed kids how to swim, dive, play various sports and gave dancing lessons to the guests. As a high school student I tutored 7th and 8th graders in an after school community center. I was one of a few staff at the University of Connecticut to instruct graduates and staff in the use of the various electronic facilites available to them.

I believe that education is a fundamental pillar in a person's life, that anyone can learn, and that people can teach each other. My goal is to help students learn what they need to be successful by using hands-on approaches where they can manipulate subject matter and "own it," meaning that they understand it thoroughly. I believe that teaching is reciprocal; in that I can teach for a student to learn and also that a student can teach me so that I can learn. I would strive to inspire a curiosity of learning and loving to learn by providing students with the experiences and opportunities to become comfortable with the material being studied. My motto for teaching is “Let go and jump in” because the only way students can learn and “own it” is by letting go of their fears in learning and get their hands into the subject matter.
