Having graduated from a liberal arts university, I know that being well-rounded is very important in life. I graduated from Whitworth with a BS in Math and minors in Spanish and Computer Science, so I know what it is like to learn complex subjects. I have tutored my peers along with students younger and older than myself, as a mathematician and a Spanish speaker. I led a Spanish Live Lab for two years and informally tutored math for four. Throughout my education, I've found that broad academic interests have led me to pursue a wide range of subjects simultaneously. Often times this is difficult to address in a classroom setting, forcing teachers to address skills by giving particular instructions (how to write a paper, how to solve an equation, etc.) thereby making education a project of memorization more so than understanding. I am a senior at Reed College studying mathematics. While at Reed I have worked as both a grader and a tutor. Having graded assignments, I can quickly grasp multiple ways to approach a problem and give commentary where necessary. I also have experience working at an alternative school as a math tutor, with students who have trouble succeeding in traditional learning environments. Furthermore, being a current student and having recently taken the GREs, much of the material is still fresh in my mind.
As both a math student and tutor, I believe the most effective approach to learning is for the tutor to act as a guide, allowing the students to make the important connections. I am very patient and have good communication skills.
