I am currently a student at the university of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where I am majoring in early childhood education with a minor in speech pathology. I am working full time as the head aftercare teacher at hickory valley Christian school where I work with elementary school children. I have much experience in teaching, I am also a current tutor with the Honors program, working with four students ranging from 5th grade to freshman in college. I am very energetic, extremely patient, but I also will not accept back talking, lying, texting on your phone, or any inappropriate behavior while I am working as your teacher. I am always available to help you, I only want to see my students le ... read more

My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : My friend and her daughter are both ADHD. Each child is unique.

Teaching brings me pleasure. What I do is to show them, help them, then have them do whatever I am teaching them to do. Sometimes one of the steps may have to be repeated, but this process really works well.
I have tutored my friend's daughter in math and English. I have assisted her with science and social studies projects. Her ADHD can inhibit the learning process, but we are able to work through the problems. Learning about weighted blankets helped me work with her. She is a kinetic learner. my nieces are both visual learners. I have to adapt to each learning style.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a born teacher, and come from a family full of them. For better or worse for those around me, I am always ready to help with research skills and writing, reading comprehension, assimilating mass amounts of information into a comprehensible format (with/for my coworkers and friends). I believe that anyone is capable of mastering standardized tests as well as any task thrown at them by the most grueling of professors. I believe in starting with the basic building blocks, making sure that those are mastered first, while allowing a student to create their own ideas and reach farther than the assignment dictates as they become ready. Everyone, children and young adults, can amaze themselves when given the right tools to accomplish an educational goal. It's not the students who succeed easily that make a lasting impression, but the ones who struggle mightily to get through a basic fi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught in the private sector for 6 years and public schools for one year. I have been tutoring for the past 15 years. All of this is has been grades 1-8. I am currently tutoring some students with learning disabilities grades 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. I feel most rewarded in working with students on an individual basis, so I no longer teach full-time. So much more progress can be made with students on one-to-one teaching. I love teaching, but like to use whatever style is best for a child and this is near impossible in a full setting classroom. My mission is to help every child reach their full potential.
The style of teaching I choose to use is based on the learning style of the student. I have been educated in the various styles of teaching and base my style on what best suits the student I am working with at the time. Most children learn from hand-on teaching, so that ... read more

As a special education teacher, I believe learning should be fun and exciting. I teach students based upon their individual needs and learning styles. I love learning and I try my best to pass that love of learning to my children and my students. Using centers in the class room, is a great way to make learning fun. Centers allow students to be actively engaged by presenting the subject material using a hands-on approach while allowing them to move about the room. Giving praise and encouragement to students is also very important in the learning process. Everyone works better when they are encouraged and loved.

My Master’s degree is in special education with a concentration in emotional and behavioral disturbance. I have worked with students who have many different types of disabilities including behavior disorders. Working with students who have behavior disorders taught me that every student needs respect, care and patience. Every teacher needs to believe that every student can learn, including the ones that may exhibit extreme behaviors. Teaching means not only individualizing instruction so that each child can learn; but, also providing the love, respect and care that each child needs to be able to learn as well.
The past five years has provided me with an amazing amount of knowledge and experience. Completing a Master's degree in special education, teaching elementary students with disabilities, working as an adjunct professor and being the Director of Early College at Northwestern T ... read more

Due to my experience with a broad range of young learners, each working at a different academic and or cognitive pace, I follow a modified Socratic approach to both my classroom and one on one instruction by placing the emphasis on the student as we identify areas for growth. I then sculpt an academic program that we both/all have helped to design, thus accessing an invaluable font of enthusiasm and insight addressing how best to approach the needs of each individual student. This is especially true for those students who don't feel heard, suffer from academic performance anxiety or are struggling with the manner in which the material has previously been presented to them.
Over the course of the past 10 years I have spent time working with students struggling to develop their academic skills, particularly in the areas of language arts and the social studies. From my initial work as ... read more

I love to help children understand a subject better. It is a great feeling to see a student get the idea after being helped. I believe that every student is capable of learning; it all depends on their learning style. In my masters program and while I have been teaching, I have learned many ways to get students engaged in the material they are learning. Some students learn better with one on one and some do better with group work. You just have to try different approaches until you see which one works best. Sometimes it just depends on what is being taught. If you show interest in the student he/she will show more interest in your class or subject area and do better.

As a Dual Master's degree graduate, I was very driven to achieve a level of excellence in education. I have earned two associate degrees, a bachelor's degree, and two master's degrees, which has given me a broad spectrum of experience in math, science, grammar, and business. During the last six years, I have taught college-level courses for Columbia College, and have tutored numerous students from elementary through high school levels.
I am passionate about education and ensuring that children can grasp the concepts that will make them successful later in life. In say this, I believe that all children have the capability to learn, just not necessarily in the same manner. Through my years of experience in teaching, I have learned to adjust styles to fit the needs of the student.
