Results-driven tutor seeking to share my love of knowledge!

I graduated high school with a full International Baccalaureate Program Diploma, and a 4.53 weighted GPA. I then went on to receive a full ride scholarship to Santa Clara University for Computer Engineering, where I took part in the University's Honors Program. There I completed 3 years of study in computer science, classical languages, and Spanish, before deciding to change directions and gain real-world experience. In a one-on-one situation, I prefer dialogue. Assuming the student does the assigned work before the session, I find that a informal, relaxed conversation on the subject matter at hand encourages the student to further explore the addressed topic. If I am familiar with the student's extra-curricular interests, I attempt to relate the subject matter to such interests. I find that questioning the student in a conversational manner produces the best results, as opposed to the more stringent (i.e. boring) task of fill-in-the-blank worksheets. For writing assignments, I ask the student to write a paragraph which we then go over line-by-line so the student has immediate feedback on any errors.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have had the experience of teaching students of all ages: kindergarteners, elementary schoolers, middle schoolers, high schoolers, and adults. I have also taught students whose primary language is not English. I have taught music in public education for the last 15 years. I have been involved in church music ministry for over 25 years, and currently am the church pianist in Stockton, Ca. I love working with children of all ages. Math is my second love and I almost majored in math instead of music. Math was always easy for me in school. Although I don't enjoy writing, I am very strong in written English and enjoy proofreading papers.
I strive to include various learning styles when working with children. Some students learn best by listening or writing, while others need movement or tactile experiences to help in comprehension. I believe in keeping students engaged at all times, to minimize wasted time. Every child has potential. A teacher just has to know how to reach each child, and that happens when the students builds trust with the teacher.

I believe in individualized teaching. In my sixth grade classroom, I individualized instruction wherever possible. In reading I tested my students and placed them in books at their reading level. I had them write reading summaries and corrected their first drafts. In sixth weeks, I retested and in most instances moved students to a higher level. In my math classes, I tested students and had them begin at the level that they needed to master. If a student could not add, I had him work on his addition skills. I moved students to the next skill level once they had mastered the level that they were working on. Of course, I did group teaching in my classroom, but I individualized wherever possible.
