I am not a teacher; I am an awakener!

Very skilled in teaching a variety of learning styles across the different areas of the multiple levels of intelligences.
I have taught in the education field since 1999. I am very fortunate to have had the privilege of working with a multitude of learners in a variety of environments. Early in my career I worked with adults that were mentally and physically challenged. I found this very rewarding and decided to pursue a degree in education, which lead me on my journey into the world of Special Education. I began working with children and young adolescents who had a variety of special needs and learning styles; I went on to specialized Autism and Special Education for K-12. After working with young children for many years I decided to branch out to work with young adolescents and adults pursuing their high school equivalency. Teaching Philosophy One’s teaching philosophy is continually evolving over time. Evolution occurs because teaching is an ongoing process. This process has brought me to develop my own personal teaching philosophy. The philosophy I have created is one that is student centered. My classrooms have become student centered. I have decided to acquaint myself with the needs and expectations of my students. The classroom culture I desire is one where my students may know they are safe and secure to learn. They need to know they are allowed to fail because one truly learns from one’s failures. Failure should not have negative connotations but to know failing only points out what we need to learn and also know what are successes are as well. In order for this to be accomplished in the classroom, I have developed, for the time being, a teaching strategy. The strategy is to put forth knowledge whi ... read more

Experienced and Proactive Educator

I believe that competence and confidence are BOTH important in learning. Students bring their own knowledge and learning styles to the process. It is the teachers job not only to adapt instructional style to best support the learner, but also to help the student understand his or her own learning style and needs.
Experienced and New York State Certified teacher. I have over 10 years experience teaching students in grades 1-12 and 5 years experience teaching adults. I also have extensive tutoring experience. I have an MA from Marist College as well as a BA from NYU. I have designed and taught SAT prep classes (verbal/writing portion) as well as developing curriculum integrating diverse domains of knowledge to create a broad, deep and flexible learning experience for students.

Lets make learning fun!

Varies from student to student
I have experience in tutoring elementary and middle school students. I found it to be very enjoyable and they did too! I do my very best to make sure your child has a good time while learning. It seems that when they are enjoying themselves they are more likely to remember what was taught. My methods of tutoring will depend on what learning style your child is most comfortable with. It is of great importance that your child builds confidence and the skills needed to move forward. I will make sure your child does not feel overwhelmed or stressed out with what I teach. By the way I teach, your child wont even realize they are being tutored! I ensure your child will improve in the subjects I tutor and have a blast while doing so! I look forward to hearing from you.

My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : I am NYS certified in Literacy (grades 5-12) and English (grades 7-12), although I have several years of experience with children as young as Kindergarten.

Holding active NYS certifications in both English and Literacy has had a tremendous impact on the way I teach. I find myself much better able to engage struggling students. Quite often, particularly when it comes to reading, it is the lack of basic comprehension skills that prevent students from being able to fully engage with a text and to perform critical thinking tasks. My experience in diagnosing and instructing students at various stages and abilities of literacy acquisition has helped me garner a talent for overcoming this challenge, and propelling students into higher order thinking.
As an educator, I view myself not as a provider of knowledge, but rather as a facilitator. I aim to encourage the critical thinking that will serve students not only in the classroom, but throughout their lives. In my experience, I have become well-versed in student-centered curriculum develo ... read more

All children can learn,

I have taught Language Arts in Middle School, 7th and 8th grade. In addition, I taught all major subjects in Grades 3, 4, 5. I have worked with students in regular education classes, and also have had previous experience with special needs children ( behavior and academics). My students have been successful with city and state assessments, and in the recently developed ratings in NYC I am "effective", very close to "highly effective", in their newly developing rating system.
My style adapts to student's needs. There are multiple points of entry for undertanding.

I truly enjoy presenting people with ideas and having them gain the knowledge and capacity to gain the intended results. I have taught and mentored people within my work setting as well. My preference has always been to allow someone to think of ideas after you give them the tools they need; it becomes both productive and rewarding at the same time.
I had a wonderful experience attending MSMC.I learned a wide variety of skills and techniques throughout the Psychology teachings as well as about the intriguing study of Psychology itself. There were many opportunities to examine and research philosophies and perform actual research as a team. I had the experience of learning a long side other students, however, I did tutor other fellow classmates at various times throughout my educational career in many venues.

More About This Tutor...

2008 Graduate in English from Boston College. My experiences with capable and engaged teachers help me hone my written and verbal skills, the reason I chose to major in English. Throughout high school, I was proficient in not only these skills, but also Mathematics and History, which led me to sample many related classes in college. I have past tutoring experience in Math and English, and my SAT scores were 710 in each of these disciplines. I also spent a lot of time mentoring children in a Learn to Skate program at Bear Mountain.
Understanding the learning habits of an individual is the key to relating to the student and making positive changes in those habits. I'm patient and empathetic, which helps me find methods to tailoring strategies unique to the student. Attempting to conform an individual to one predescribed style is the reason they're left behind in the first place. Ther ... read more

Although I am a traditional student, high school was a difficult time for me and I felt largely misunderstood by my teachers. As such, I have committed to creating a safe learning environment where students feel comfortable to be themselves. I have high expectations for my students and am capable of adjusting my style to accommodate a diverse population of learners. When working with individuals or in small group I tailor the material to meet the needs of each student and make sure to consider their feedback at the end of each lesson.
