It is often that I can help a student get over a small hurdle, but afterward the student is reluctant to take up more time to ask another question while others are having problems and waiting. In college I was able to tutor children in reading and math at Tucson Metropolitan Ministries. After I received my bachelor's degree in ecology and evolutionary biology (minoring in science education), I wanted to teach youth in an alternative setting. I taught for six months at Lutheran, Retreats, Camps and Conferences in California. I gained experience in hands-on teaching styles and how to provide concrete examples for abstract ideas. My teaching style devotes about half the time to direct instruction, but I make that a firm upper limit. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work.
