Teaching Style: When the school busses arrived in the morning at Drumlin Farm, I would always welcome the visiting pupils with great enthusiasm. I would determine what the boys and girls already knew, or thought they knew, and what they would like to learn. Then we would go off to have a joyous and educational time learning about, and milking the cows, collecting and scrambling eggs, or planting pumpkin seeds in the warm May soil. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work. A Little Bit About Me...

The following are two of my favorite experiences with math tutoring. One high school sophomore was making a D in geometry and needed help studying for her first semester final exam. After I worked with her for only three hours she missed making a B by one percentage point and never made less than a B on any subsequent quizzes or tests under my tutelage. Another middle school girl actually cried when she first had to work with the concept of estimating. In this case I set aside the prescribed materials, created several new estimating concepts and within fifteen minutes she was laughing and suggesting additional estimation applications with the new materials. I believe my success in these instances was because of my ability to bring life to the topic and to read the intellectual and emotional state of my students.
