My comments on tutoring PSAT : 220

Depending on the subject, I utilize from my own academic career tools that I found were the most effective and most successful. More than willing to pass on my knowledge, I pledge to do my best in delivering the information in a concise manner that gets straight to the point.
Experience: Standardized Testing Scores: ACT - 35 SAT - 2300 SAT II Math II - 800 SAT II Chemistry - 800 SAT II Biology - 790 5's on all AP Tests listed above. I've been tutoring for the better part of two years. Through that time, I have gained an earnest understanding of what it means to be an effective mentor. I stand by my belief that knowing the information and teaching the information are two entirely different things. When I tutor, I use techniques that get directly to the heart of the information. I primarily tutor ACT/SAT prep, Math to Calculus III, and all the Sciences. I am ... read more

Students must be challenged, not coddled. Students at all levels need to be pushed to find their limits and then move beyond them. Only then can they achieve real growth. We must use education as a tool to educate the next generation not only for employment but also for citizenship. In so doing, we need to take into account historical precedents and objective reality ... read more

I have recently graduated from the University of Delaware and intend to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry within the next few years. My major was in Chemistry with a minor in Biochemistry; I also focused on Theatre, Japanese, French, English, and Biology. As a high school student I participated in peer tutoring. While in high school I volunteered to serve as a tutor in Algebra, Geometry, Chemistry, Zoology, and Biology. I believe a great teacher needs to have proper skills and talents for teaching. I learned a lot while growing up from a great teacher; my mother. My mother was a teacher for thirty years teaching elementary grades. I learned a great teacher needs to be respectful, patient and to be able to illustrate the lesson in an easy, simple way. I try to provide simple analogies for each concept. This enables the stu ... read more

If I had to pick one style it would be direct teaching. Although being a special education teacher I also use the cognitive strategy instruction. This approach is very helpful as a tool to help students develop the necessary skills to be self-regulated learners. One should continually differentiate the lesson utilizing all the modalities. When I facilitate interaction between the class it will depend on the lesson sometimes having the whole class participate is the way to go, other times it is helpful to employ small groups. I believe you have to be versatile yet consistent I feel this is important for the learning styles of the students.

I like working with grade-school students, but I like best a variety of teaching situations. That for me truly represents the challange of teaching. Only a diversity of students can bring learning to itself, reveal the demands of cognition for what they are. As a philosophy PhD this interests me very much.
