From the time I was 16 years old I have worked around children, teaching them and trying to create positive experiences. I chose to go into teaching because of this. I earned my BS in Elementary Education where my education program required me to work three to four hours a week in a classroom learning from an experienced teacher. Upon graduating college my first teaching position was in the sixth grade where I taught the core subjects. After teaching sixth grade for one year I moved to a fifth grade classroom. Throughout college I had extensive experience working with classmates while we solved math equations and physics problems together. I did volunteer work teaching English to children in Mexico as well as teaching English to college age students in Mexico.
I like to first get an idea of what the student knows about the problem.. I find that the more time I spend listening to what they know it naturally turns into what pieces I need to add-in. Unless they came to the session to learn new material that would be a different scenario entirely in which it would depend on the student how I taught. I would have to find out what type of a learner they are. Whether it be a visual learner, if they need examples or are an entirely conceptual type of learner.
