Local Chess Tutor - $20/hr

I learned chess very young but didn't start really getting into it until the first day of high school. My homeroom teacher had a chess board on his desk and asked me to play; I accepted his challenge and he then only took 4 moves to put me in checkmate. Three months later, i was finally able to beat him after heavy amounts of practice and lots of games with online opponents along with my fellow classmates. A couple months after that, with the same amount of practice, I could beat him without a problem. I constantly preach this anecdote because it shows that it doesn't matter where you start or how good you are at something, you can accomplish great things if you put your mind to it and practice, practice, practice! Of course, it's always easier to have a tutor or coach to guide you along the way to teach you right from wrong and show you what to practice, just as a teacher would make you ... read more

Chess is one of my top subjects! I teach chess for all levels and ages! I am a U.S National Chess Master with a rating of 2302 (that's ranked top 15 in the entire state) and World Federation Master, former US National Junior Champion and 2x IL High School Champion (2010-2011). Chess improves focus, memory, concentration, patience, and teaches one to make the right decisions in life. Starting from age 6, it surely helped me improve my grades in school and helped me acquire life skills necessary for the real world.

I am currently teaching in multiple schools in the Chicagoland area. I also give private lessons to more interested students. I am 21 years old and started playing chess since I was 6, which gives me over a decade of experience! Note to parents: The benefits of playing chess are immense, and this would be a great opportunity to enrich your child's life by introducing chess! I believe that the most effective teacher is one who guides the students to finding the correct answers. Instead of simply giving out answers, a teacher should encourage students and help them along the process for them to find out the solutions on their own. By overseeing this learning process and helping along the way, the teacher ensures that the student will learn that they are capable of learning the material and further increase their confidence in academics.
I obtained a strong liberal arts education where I was able to experience and learn about a wide range of academic topics. However, I have a strong focus and specialization in the sciences with a BA in both Biology and Chemistry with a Mathematics minor.
