Local Chess Tutor - $20/hr

I learned chess very young but didn't start really getting into it until the first day of high school. My homeroom teacher had a chess board on his desk and asked me to play; I accepted his challenge and he then only took 4 moves to put me in checkmate. Three months later, i was finally able to beat him after heavy amounts of practice and lots of games with online opponents along with my fellow classmates. A couple months after that, with the same amount of practice, I could beat him without a problem. I constantly preach this anecdote because it shows that it doesn't matter where you start or how good you are at something, you can accomplish great things if you put your mind to it and practice, practice, practice! Of course, it's always easier to have a tutor or coach to guide you along the way to teach you right from wrong and show you what to practice, just as a teacher would make you ... read more

Chess is one of my top subjects! I teach chess for all levels and ages! I am a U.S National Chess Master with a rating of 2302 (that's ranked top 15 in the entire state) and World Federation Master, former US National Junior Champion and 2x IL High School Champion (2010-2011). Starting from age 6, it surely helped me improve my grades in school and helped me acquire life skills necessary for the real world.

I am currently teaching in multiple schools in the Chicagoland area. I also give private lessons to more interested students. More About This Tutor...

I believe that the most effective teacher is one who guides the students to finding the correct answers. Instead of simply giving out answers, a teacher should encourage students and help them along the process for them to find out the solutions on their own. By overseeing this learning process and helping along the way, the teacher ensures that the student will learn that they are capable of learning the material and further increase their confidence in academics.
I obtained a strong liberal arts education where I was able to experience and learn about a wide range of academic topics. However, I have a strong focus and specialization in the sciences with a BA in both Biology and Chemistry with a Mathematics minor. Math and science has been a strong area of mine, as I was a Supplemental Instructor for a genetics course for two semesters, as well as being a Laboratory Assistant that ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I come from a large family of teachers, so teaching and mentoring students is in my blood. Receiving help with homework and research was always a top priority for my parents. The key component that my parents have passed along to me, regarding teaching, is patience. As someone who was diagnosed with A.D.D. as a child, I know the importance of patience in terms to the success of learning, and that not everyone understands concepts the same way. My job is to make these new concepts easy to understand and fun to learn about at the same time. I want to let the student know that I can relate to their problems, having gone through some of them myself as a child.
As a holder of two Journalism degrees I have been through the extensive rigors of college and know what it takes to get assignments done properly and haned in on time. I feel that the experience of having just been in c ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Obtaining a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering has exposed me to advanced courses of Math and Science, two subjects which have always fascinated me. I have pursued and achieved excellence in these areas all through my school years and my post graduation career as an industrial engineer has only advanced my knowledge in these areas. English language has been a strong interest of mine since an early age and I have actively cultivated that interest. My reading, writing and grammatical skills have only improved over the years with all the reports, theses and presentations that I had prepared during the course of my education. I have previous and current experience of tutoring students in Math, English and Science.
As a recipient of higher levels of education, I know the career opportunities that such an education opens up later in life. And I am motivated to share my knowledge an ... read more

I believe that each student is unique. Therefore, a variety of teaching methods within a supportive learning environment are required to address each student's uniqueness. I have found that students relate to analogies, practical examples, discovery, computer simulations, and real life applications as opposed to straight memorization of content. Above all, the optimal blend of patience and guidance are required to motivate each student to achieve success. I have worked in a variety of educational roles and have experienced that, as an educator, there is no greater feeling than to see a student's eyes light up after a concept is grasped. For me, this is the ultimate achievement of student success!
My experiences in schools, hospitals and business provide me with the diversity to instruct students in subjects, such as math, general science, biology, business concepts and English ... read more
