I believe a hands on approach to teaching a subject is the best way for a child to succeed. I believe that flashcards as well as games help younger children succeed in mastering a subject. Making a subject fun is key to helping a child tackle a tough subject. For older kids, practice tests are very helpful as well as flashcards. Encouragement and support is also an important part of mastery.
I have been a volunteer tutor at a local elementary school during their aftercare program. I have also been a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Memphis to a first grader who had trouble with math (adding,subtracting, and multiplication). I have also helped fellow peers study for tests and the Reading and English sections of the ACT.

I love working with children. I have 3 of my own and I am currently studying for a Master of Science in Higher Education so that I can teach. I would love to teach college courses, but my main focus is teaching elementary students. I think it would be easier for me to tutor younger kids versus high shcool children. I graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas in 1980 with a BA in psychology. Hoping to go further with those studies, I took the GRA exam and planned to begin the Master's Degree program that fall.
