I understand that any child can run into problems with schoolwork. I try to find out why the child is having a problem before trying to help them. Did he miss something and fall behind? Is she simply bored with the subject? The approach I take with the child depends on the answers to these questions. I feel it is important for the learner to understand that there is a reason for making the effort to learn each subject. In math, I like to assign the numbers and equations to subjects the learner likes, such as pizza, sports or music, for example. I studied Art History at Florida State University, which required a number of essay and extensive seminar classes, which taught me different ways to complete 10-20 page papers. I have worked teaching children in many different environments, in a preschool, Boys and Girls club, and at their homes. I have worked with children all ages from one to fifteen, with language and basic math skills.
I strongly believe in allowing the student to learn through their own will and with their own techniques, I try to just be the vessel that allows them to get to this point. I elected to homeschool my three children who are now teenagers; thus I have many years of one-on-one teaching experience. I feel that some children need to be away from the stresses sometimes experienced at school in order to discover their academic gifts. An individual tutor has the luxury to get to know the student, see thier potential, and cheer them on in a way that a classroom teacher may not have the time to do.
