I have had 7 years of life experience teaching both of my daughters and their friends about the world around them. I teach them about the basics of geology and life science including plant life. English and spelling. Also I teach them about the basics of freehand drawing. We work on line spacing and using geometric designs in their drawing. And using negative space in their drawings.
I believe that involving the student with as much hands on learning as possible, helps them in being able to relate with and withold what they are learning. Also paying attention when there are areas of struggle for the student and focusing attention on them. What I have discovered about myself is that I learn differently from other people. I am the kind of person who prefers to set aside that assembly instruction manual and put together that Christmas toy by laying out the pieces in an orderly fashion. There is so much pleasure in problem solving. I learn by asking myself questions. I have little patience for mundane drills and memorization if they can be avoided. Each child is different.
