There is no better of a feeling than to have a former student come back and tell you how much you helped them once they have went off to college. Showing students love and respect, as well as, treating them fair makes a difference when teaching. When students know that you care about them,that is when the student will put the best foot forward to learn.
As an undergraduate tutoring math, I realized quickly that I had a gift to explain math and make it easy for others to understand. As a graduate of Elizabeth City State University, I pursued an education in Computer Science with a minor in mathematics. I have gained experience in the these two fields in which I excel in. I have had experience tutoring young children at my church(math), as well as helping other peers during my tenure at Elizabeth City State University. As a tutor, I try to identify the learning strategies of my students and then build off of those. For example, if I notice that a student is a visual learner, then I will try to incorporate diagrams, models, and schematics that can assist the student in understanding the subject matter or solving the problem. If, on the other hand, a student learns best by reading, then I will provide step by step instructions of how to find answers to various problems, or provide guidance as to how to identify important elements from a text. In any event, I try to show students several different strategies for learning or for approaching a given problem and let them determine which one makes the best sense to them.
