Graduate student looking to help students achieve their goals!

I think teaching styles should differ based on the preferred learning style of the student. The teaching style should play on the strengths and preferences of that particular student. That being said, I foster a student-centered approach to learning. This approach encourages the student play an equal, active role in the learning process, rather than a passive role. A cooperative approach is important so the student can feel like he or she is an active and capable participant in learning the material. I also believe in leading by example and allowing the student to use me as a resource for reviewing their work.

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated with honors from PSU and have a strong desire to work with and help children. I have a passion for literacy and believe it has the power to change lives. I am a single mom of a 14-year-old son and have also volunteered with the African Women’s Coalition to tutor African Refugee children. Working with the children transformed my life and taught me the importance of knowledge.
I am known for my amazing listening skills and empathy. I am a student of Non-violent communication and use it at every opportunity. I love to teach with symbolism and visual techniques. Most of all I find it is important to listen to the child and see how they need to be taught and adjust to their comfort levels. My teaching philosophy is first to have the knowledge for the subjects. Then, I think you need to understand the youth learning styles and to find out where they are with their knowledge and then begin from there. Certainly some refreshing maybe necessary, but most of the time the youth is behind so the teaching would focus on helping them reach their potential and moving forward.
