As of June, 2007, I retired with 30 years experience as a public educator. After earning a BS in Communication Education and Biology, the next sixteen years, I served the state of South Carolina as a coordinator of natural resource education for public and private schools activities and programs to supplement their existing curricula. Since, February, 1997, I served Spartanburg School Dist. Five as a middle school classroom teacher of life and earth science. During my tenure, my students consistently met basic standards for 7th & 8th grade science as required by the S.C. Dept. of Education. Over 80% of my students attained proficient or advanced standing in science as measured by the end-of-year state standards testing program.
My role in the process of education is to guide students through a systematic methodology designed to create awareness, increase knowledge, and develop ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that tutors are most effective as supplements to classroom teaching. It's my job to clear up questions that might not have been answered, or to take the time to explain the fundamental concepts necessary to continue with the material. I also believe that our time together is best served when the student has already attempted some work and comes prepared with specific questions. I'm willing to spend a long time explaining concepts in different ways, and multiple times. I don't mind building off of ideas learned several weeks before in order to ensure the student understands the current material.
I have received a Bachelors degree in both math and physics, as well as a Masters in applied math. All through college, and even back in high school, I excelled in both math and science. So, though my degrees are in math, I also have a well rounded knowledge of the rest of th ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in good classroom management and organized lesson plans. I set appropriate boundaries and expect the students to follow the rules that are set before them. That being said I try to make the learning as fun as possible but organized. I also try to bring in anything that they are interested in to make them enjoy the subject they are learning. If I can find an example in life they can relate to that will help them learn something I will find it and bring it in. I love working with children and really love math.
Although I have been self employed for the last 6 years, I went back to school last year to add Science and Math for middle school to my certification. I passed the Praxis for both of those subjects spring of 2010. I was not able to get a full time teaching position this year. I went back to working for myself but would love to tutor. I have tutored for 3 yea ... read more

I have learned a graet deal through speaking to high school athletes and their parents about the college recruiting process. I've learned how to relate to the kids on their level and attention spans while still being able to get my message across to them. I can help get the kids motivated to want to study while helping them understand the material and be able to retain it for tests. I'm new to tutoring but have received lots of positive feedback from families who I've spoken to about college recruiting so I believe with my academic background I will be able to make a difference in a kids life through his or her studies. I can also tutor adults who are working to acquire their GED or ones that be struggling with college courses.

More About This Tutor...

I am a recent graduate of Clemson University with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. I also competed in Division I athletics while pursuing my degree and I have enjoyed successes in both athletics and academics. For the past year I have been tutoring students in chemistry and mathematics.
I thoroughly enjoy helping students learn and watching students succeed. Complex subjects such as chemistry can be overwhelming to some students and I believe that the best way to teach these subjects is to give the student a firm understanding of the whole concept and then concentrate on the specifics. Finding a way to relate a concept to a student is key. I find that just having someone there to explain a concept in a way that is easy to understand can change a student's whole perspective on a particular subject or discipline.

I started substitute teaching in September 2001 in the Greenville County School District in Greenville, South Carolina. The Greenville County School District uses a computer system to contact teachers to substitute in schools which starts calling substitute teachers at 5:30am on the school day. I taught K-12 all subjects and special ed. In September through December 2005 I substituted at Duncan Elementry School in Duncan, South Carolina K-3rd grade. January through June 2006 I substitute taught at Easley High School in Easley, South Carolina all classes.
Use of teaching materials is very important in my teaching. There are methods for teaching children to read and to do math that use materials sold by companies. One way to find out about teaching materials to use is to ask people who have home schooled.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love learning and the precision arts such as mathematics. This has driven me to begin in a computer career. I spent almost two decades applying my computer skills. Learning has never stopped for me. But then I love the outdoors and working with my hands. I have taught myself the carpentry trade and the concrete business. I started out by sitting down with the manuals and memorized the building codes before I built my own house. Recently I applied mathematics to a roof I was building. Simple, yes, but not everyone would take the time to lay it out on paper and get accurate measurements. I hope one day that I will be able to combine mathematics with real life applications as I home school my own son.
What I have discovered about myself is that I learn differently from other people. I am the kind of person who prefers to set aside that assembly instruction manual and ... read more

I enjoy teaching! And I believe I have the credentials and experience to educate those who are willing to learn in the areas of math and basic sciences. I graduated with degrees in Engineering and Business, which has exposed me to various levels of math and science. I have worked as an Ad Hoc Instructor at Medaille College teaching Algebra and The History of Business. This experience taught me how to reach people at various levels of understanding and then aid them in elevating their comprehension. I’ve also privately tutored students in subjects ranging from Pre-Algebra to Introduction to Statistics to Chemistry. I currently teach Bible classes which helps me to effectively hone in my teaching skills.

I have been highly involved in the community since I can remember. I think being able to give back is just as important as achieving a successful career. I have been fortunate enough to coach several different sports teams and volunteer in several organizations throughout my high school and college careers. I am confident with my decisions to complete two bachelors degrees in Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering, as I've always enjoyed and excelled in math and science.
