A Little Bit About Me...

After graduation, I taught on a transitional teaching license. I taught in the Woodburn School District. I then went to Japan and taught English as a second language. I grew up between Bolivia and the United States and speak Spanish and English fluently. I took statistics in university and taught math in Spanish from time to time as a substitute for the Woodburn School District. In Woodburn I taught a self contained classroom for a while. I had to teach ELL students Social Studies, Math, Language arts in both Spanish and English and science. As a substitute I taught all kinds of classrooms including all subject matters. This makes me qualified to teach a variety of subject matters in a variety of situations.

In addition to completing accounting courses for my B.S. in Accounting, I completed two courses in Child Development and Education, and all college level math courses through Calculus. I have tutored students in math since 1989. At Juniper Elementary in Bend, OR, I was a Good News Club teacher and volunteered as a reading specialist working to improve reading skills of struggling students. I also teach music lessons, group and individual. I received teacher training through CEF. With my love for teaching, I have enjoyed the honor of homeschooling my 4 children who test as gifted and talented and exceed in all areas on their testing.

I believe that the most important element of teaching and tutoring is the ability to vary one's teaching style to meet the learning style of a student. I am patient and comfortable explaining things multiple times and in multiple ways. I believe I have the creativity to help any student find a way to make sense of his or her material. I believe firmly in experiential education, in which subject matter becomes alive to the learner through activities or other practical approaches.
