Effective, caring tutoring from an experienced tutor

I summarize my approach to tutoring with "3 E's": Enthusiasm, Engagement, and Encouragement. I try hard to make each session fun and to engage the student in seeking the solution, rather than just teaching him or her a method.
I have been tutoring in math since I was in Jr High. Initially my students were sisters and brothers, then nephews and nieces, and finally I began tutoring as a second career. My background includes 30 years as an engineer and engineering manager, as well as teaching math at the community college level and volunteering as an adult literacy tutor. I love applying math to real world problems, and I do my best to come up with pertinent examples to help a student learn a new concept.

A Little Bit About Me...

While I was in high school, I took honors courses and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. I tutored an 8th grade-9th grade boy in TCAPS preparation and helped him complete homework in Math (pre-algebra, algebra, and pre-geometry), Science (biology), and English. I tutored him for two years. After I graduated high school I was accepted to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where I am currently in the spring semester of my sophomore year. I will be returning to Johnson City this summer and am available to tutor. I babysit two young boys currently, one of whom is 5 and I help him with kindergarten homework,such as learning words and reading. I am capable of helping with all ages. My passion is teaching mathematics. After a single year of retirement I missed teaching so much that I now either teach or tutor at three locations. In the classroom I have a casual, informal style that is more like a conversation with my students than a formal lecture. After presenting a problem for students to analyze and solve, my most common tactic is to ask a series of scaffolded (rather than Socratic) questions-designed to lead students to their own method to resolve the situation. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting. I have very strong math skills, especially in Algebra, which is what my daughter is learning now.
