Sociology is one of my top subjects!

In addition to my education, I have previous experience tutoring students in elementary school up to college students. I am skilled in working with kids with ADHD as well as other behavioral disorders, such as DBD and ODD. I have been working in the behavioral health field for 2 years and can apply knowledge and experience to help kids in a unique way to improve academic success. I worked as a synthetic organic chemist at Eli Lilly pharmaceutical company for five years. I spent the next 20+ years as a stay-at-home mom and homeschooler, teaching my three children from kindergarten until they graduated from high school.(My two oldest are now college graduates and the third is presently in college.) During my years of homeschooling, I taught both chemistry and biology to high school students in our homeschool group. While I enjoy working with a younger population, I have had more experience with middle school, high school, and college students. I am very patient and easy-going, but I also expect that my students perform the tasks asked of them in the time given, as to further reach our goals. I have a descriptive way of teaching, but I am also a firm believer in using abstract methods in order to obtain and understanding. Visual aids can also be very helpful, such as using pictures, every-day items, or a chemistry model set.

A Little Bit About Me...

Students learn better when they see the relevance of the material they are studying to their own lives. In many subject areas this relevance is not obvious, and students may tune out as a result. I always use concrete examples that students can relate to when explaining a concept. For example, when discussing paternalism with college students I will often cite government regulation of tobacco and alcohol use to illustrate how the concept translates into laws that directly affect them. I am easy going and use humor to put my students at ease and hold their interest.
