More About This Tutor...

I have spent most of my life in an academic environment. I thrive on success- not only my own, but also the success of others around me. I became a substitute teacher in order to gain experience as a classroom leader. Tutoring is a necessary duty of an educator. I believe a one on one environment is conducive to learning and retaining information; being able to receive direct feedback from an educator is one of the most valuable assets to a young learner.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a passion for learning as well as sharing my knowledge with others. I obtained a BA in Mathematics and am currently working on MAT in Mathematics. While in college I was part of a tutoring/mentoring program and helped my peers with math. I also had an opportunity to prepare high school students for the Alabama Grad Exam during a summer session with the Upward Bound Program. I currently help children in my community with any problems they may face in mathematics.
Teaching has been a desire of mine since I taught math at a local high school for two years. I am a firm believer in giving accurate, detailed information and being prepared for any questions that someone may have. I don't expect everyone to learn at the same pace, and I make sure that I provide various methods to solving certain problems. I believe that anything is possible, even learning Math.

I love teaching and working with children of all ages and abilities. I'm a firm believer in creative learning through fun and interesting activities. I am also a firm believer that everyone learns at different paces and through different means: using visual, auditory, and tactile learning to find what works best. I am patient and understanding and strive to find the best possible ways of learning for each individual. I believe that everyone has great potential for success and I look to find that potential in all of my students' lives.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to see the light-bulb go on inside as children grasp material they are struggling with. At first, I teach and watch to see their facial expressions and comprehension in order to figure out what they are struggling with. Then, I approach the topic from a different way, tailored to their specific struggles. I continue to reassess their comprehension and approach the topic from different angles until I break through. Take algebra, for example. Often times, students struggle with having to "show their work." The long process required to get to the answer becomes confusing. I find that a simpler, shorter process is comprehended well. So, I start with this. I make sure that they have mastered the shorter, simpler technique and then, I broaden their understanding so they are able to master the longer process required by their teachers.
I have a BA and MS degree in Psychology, which ... read more

I worked for 11 years in Virginia as a paraprofessional in the school system, originally doing strictly homebase work with handicapped children, then moving into the schools. I worked with middle school children faced with a wide range of disabilities and disorders, including ADHD, Downs, emotional issues and hearing impairments. I have worked with many of my classmates through my college years, helping them to prepare research papers and presentations at the same time as I was working on mine. I also have a 13 year old son who has been in gifted programs since he was in the fourth grade; he is now involved in the Duke TIP program and recently scored a 22 overall on the ACT test, with his highest scores in reading and English.
I enjoy helping children discover new areas, encouraging them to move way from the trite and trivial to new and daring concepts in their research. Often a tr ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working, teaching, and mentoring children. I have learned to adjust to the different learning styles of children, which makes it easier for the child to feel more comfortable with learning. In order to work with children there has to be a great amount of patience and concern. I have learned patience through working with children from all walks of life and I have come to appreciate each child's story. I belive that reaching out to those in need will not only help someone else to meet their full potential but for the teacher also. I believe in making a difference in other's life because others have helped shaped me into who I am today.

More About This Tutor...

I have tutored students in math and science (mainly math) for over 13 years. I have helped students in various levels of mathematics - basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus. After working with me on a consistent basis (2/3 days/week) many of the students have received honors in their math courses, including "Most Improved" and "Highest Average". I am also proud to say that a couple of students have actually decided to pursue careers that require a good understanding of math - i.e. engineering, architecture.
I enjoy working with students of all ages, although most of my experience has been with middle school age and older. I use a couple of different techniques to help students understand math, including using visual aides, problem solving techniques, role reversal (where they explain a lesson to me), blackboard/whiteboard work, and games. I obtained a bachelor of science in chemistry from the University of Alabama. But more importantly, i was deeply involved with cutting-edge scientific research throughout my undergraduate experience. In essence, I didn't just study to pass my exams, I studied to understand the material so that I can be able to teach someone else. I have also tutored introductory physics I and II at the university of Alabama center for Teaching and Learning. At first, I started out as a "typical" tutor - and had one-on-one tutoring sessions with college students. The session lasted about one hour per student. As time progressed though, i was assigned a classroom with up to 20 physics students at a time. Iattended to the students for 6 hours at a stretch. of course, they were free to leave when they felt confident about their coursework and other students replaced. I tutored for almost two years, not just ... read more
