I would describe my teaching style as hands on and according to multiple learning styles. I understand that students learn best when they have the option of working with material objects. I also realize that students all learn in different ways and therefore I try to teach to each student's learning style. If a student doesn't understand it one way, I try to teach it another way so that he/she can learn it.
In 2001, I graduated from IUP with a degree in elementary education. I substitute taught around the South Hills of Pittsburgh for a year, then moved to Virginia, where I taught fifth grade for four years. I approach tutoring with the assumption that every student wants to learn more but isn’t always sure how to proceed. Each student brings his or her own perspective to understanding a subject. I try to find where the student is having difficulty and how they process the material i.e. are they a visual learner, auditory, kinesthetic learner etc… It is also important to address any misconceptions they have and to do so early so that they can build a sound base for learning. I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.
