I studied chemistry in India (IIT - Delhi, MSc) and in Canada (McGill University, Montreal, PhD). During my PhD, I extensively tutored undergraduates and high school students. I have several year's experience in the pharmaceutical industry and continue to help students in learning concepts in chemistry. I understand the need to have a focused preparation for exams - something which is lacking in the education system at large. Taking a standardized test requires a special set of skills in itself, so it is no surprise that many individuals (myself included) have spend countless hours dissecting and conquering them. Allow me to share with you some of the tips and tricks I learned as an MCAT tutor. I have been teaching/tutoring students in life science for over 20 years, but it all started with my BA from UC Berkeley in Integrative Biology. As a classroom instructor, I am conscious that one needs to constantly engage with and interact with the class. I always taught in a tutorial style, where after I've introduced the material the students must solve a puzzle or problem based on it. I believe that to engage students there must be a discovery component to the class. In a tutoring role, one can take the students strengths and build on those. Often a student has lost all confidence (and hope!) and doesn't realize how much he or she knows. By patiently building from simple problems this confidence can be restored. As a graduate student at UC Berkeley, I was a TA for twelve semesters in a range of physics classes. In 2002 I won the UC Berkeley Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor award. I get to know students on a personal level and find out their learning style and modes of learning. I also assess their current skill level and knowledge of the subject so that I know where from where to start. There are often "holes" of information that are missing from students that can cause increasing problems as lessons build upon knowledge previously learned.
