A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from Sonoma State with a BA in English, Single subject emphasis. I am taking a year off before I go back to get my teaching credential in reading. The majority of my classes were geared towards the teaching of reading and writing and I feel confident in my ability to help students improve in those areas. I also worked in a High School writing center and tutored for the past two semesters. I love being around kids and helping them. Currently I live in Tahoe City, but am more than willing to drive to Reno or other areas as well.

Learn with experienced, successful tutor

My style of tutoring is creative flexibility. I assess the student's learning style and try to adapt to that, using different senses (kinetic, aural, oral) to trigger best responses. However, this is layered over a basic multi-part structure suited to the subject. I also like to set up a schedule of what our hour will be like, with some beginning exercises (usually recall from previous session). The rest of the hour would be structured with student input as much as possible. At the end, I like to introduce some free time to talk about the lesson and about any new ideas.
I have a masters degree in Enviornmental Biology and a BA in pre-med sciences. I also have an AA degree in Dietetics. My other hat is a long career in writing, editing, and publishing. My comments on tutoring Writing : My students have demonstrated their writing ability in their emails with native English speakers in the business world. My students in school recieved better grades in their work. I measured my success as a tutor by my students test scores and feedback from business colleagues.

I believe learning should be two way. Students should learn from a teacher and the teacher should be willing to learn from the students. My lessons are personalized to the student needs. My lessons are interactive.

Never tell a child when you can ask him.

I have 6 years of substitute teaching experience in the Washoe County School District in Nevada, as well as at a charter school. Substitute teaching has allowed me to work with children from preschool to grade 12, in all subjects. I have worked twice as a preschool teacher, once at the E.L. The setting as a Sunday school teacher is different than the usual classroom experience. However, the parents and elders expect results and it is very satisfying to see the children respond with good answers and, especially, with good questions for me. I have learned so very much from my students. I have taught and encouraged little ones from toddlers to 12 years of age, both boys and girls. My tutoring experience has been limited but not through lack of trying. I tutored one high school youth in algebra and geometry. He did well and passed his class. Overall, my one-on-one experience extends to the university arena where I helped, and was helped by, my classmates. I have a Business Speech Communications degree with a minor in English. After achieving that degree, I went on to earn a secondary teaching credential in English. Later, I found an opportunity at UNR to become a tutor at the writing center. There I direct students to better their papers (in all disciplines) by facilitating.
