Florida Certified Educator for Elementary to High School

I have a collaborative style of teaching. My ultimate goal is to get students to think, regardless of their age. With younger students, I tend to be much more directive so that we accomplish intended learning. With middle and high school students, I ask "Why" and "How do you know" quite often so that they learn to provide evidence for their thinking. Getting the RIGHT answer isn't the goal -- understanding and developing critical thinking processes are much more valuable!

As a teenager, I learned the importance of having role models, both in and out of the classroom. Some of my biggest influences are old teachers and coaches. After I graduated high school, I attended the University of Florida, where I majored in Telecommunications, and had an outside study in English. This led me to substitute in Marion County for a year. After one year of subbing, I decided I wanted to enrich the lives of adolescents full-time. I became a teacher at my former high school, Vanguard, where I stayed for two years. I currently hold a bachelor of science degree in biology and also have obtained a minor in chemistry. The major subject areas taught in my college curriculum where biology, chemistry, math, and physics. I feel that I am completely comfortable in teaching any one of the subjects. In the past five years I have been a CPR/first aid instructor for future lifeguards. At the end of twenty four hour training class each student was required to pass a test with an 80% or better.In addition to this, during my last two college years I tutored college and high school students on a volunteer basis.
