ASL Certified Tutor

I not only tutor American Sign Language, I offer beginner instruction as well. My methods obviously differ between the two, when I tutor I facilitate a very relaxed, fun way of communicating utilizing ASL to appropriate the student's level of skill and determine which areas need work. I like letting the student be in as much control as possible as far as the pace and duration. In a teaching situation, I start with the Alphabet and with the basic building blocks of the language. Each session is then individualized week to week in order to be precursory to the next and structured based on the pace of the student.
I had excelled in my first American Sign Language class in the 10th grade and proceeded to take the progressive courses that my high school offered. I also took a Psychology course and graduated with an Advanced Diploma in 2005. Immediately following graduation, I enrolled ... read more

Sign Language is one of my top subjects! I have a B.A. in ASL. I was taught by Deaf professors and have many Deaf friends. I have worked as a Deaf advocate and am aware of not only the language but the culture, history, and social issues in the Deaf community.

I am very flexible and try my best to match my approach to my student.
I obtained my Associates in ASL then went on to my Bachelors in ASL. I plan to pursue a Masters in Social Work for Deaf and HH from Gallaudet University. I have taken several summer classes at Gallaudet to immerse myself in the Deaf world. I worked as a Deaf advocate in upstate NY and maintain advocacy ties within the Deaf community. I served as Vice President of Alpha Mu Gamma which is an honors society for foreign language. I was inducted due to my achievements in ASL. I am very passionate about ASL and the Deaf community. I spent a semester observing ASL classrooms with the goal to analyze the difference between hearing teachers and Deaf teachers. I have worked with two ASL clubs in order to advise the club officers on how best to involve students with meets of the Deaf community in a culturally appropriate m ... read more

My comments on tutoring Sign Language : ASL

Hi! My name is Jessica, and i am a sign language tutor! My mother is deaf, so I was raised constantly immersed in deaf culture and sign language (ASL). I also have experience teaching ASL to people of all ages, and I'm now teaching my own children (ages1 & 2) to sign. I also have some experience as a sign language interpreter.

Beginning my sign language career in high school, I have learned to embrace the beautiful language and culture of the deaf community. At that time, I began to tutor a deaf child with minimal language skills and have been tutoring on and off ever since. During my college years, I was asked to tutor American Sign Language for the University of South Florida's athletic program. Currently, I am an educational sign language interpreter working in a middle school. I have my Bachelors degree in Communication and Science Disorders with a concentration in the Interpreter Training Track as well as a minor in American Sign Language. I have my Florida’s Quality Assurance Level One Certification for interpreters and continue to strive to improve my skills everyday. I love working with students of all ages and enjoy sharing my knowledge of American Sign Language with any that wish to learn.
