ASL Certified Tutor

I not only tutor American Sign Language, I offer beginner instruction as well. My methods obviously differ between the two, when I tutor I facilitate a very relaxed, fun way of communicating utilizing ASL to appropriate the student's level of skill and determine which areas need work. I like letting the student be in as much control as possible as far as the pace and duration. In a teaching situation, I start with the Alphabet and with the basic building blocks of the language. Each session is then individualized week to week in order to be precursory to the next and structured based on the pace of the student.

Sign Language is one of my top subjects! I have a B.A. in ASL. I was taught by Deaf professors and have many Deaf friends. I have worked as a Deaf advocate and am aware of not only the language but the culture, history, and social issues in the Deaf community.

I obtained my Associates in ASL then went on to my Bachelors in ASL. I plan to pursue a Masters in Social Work for Deaf and HH from Gallaudet University. I have taken several summer classes at Gallaudet to immerse myself in the Deaf world. I worked as a Deaf advocate in upstate NY and maintain advocacy ties within the Deaf community. I served as Vice President of Alpha Mu Gamma which is an honors society for foreign language. I was inducted due to my achievements in ASL. I am very passionate about ASL and the Deaf community. I spent a semester observing ASL classrooms with the goal to analyze the difference between hearing teachers and Deaf teachers. I have worked with two ASL clubs in order to advise the club officers on how best to involve students with meets of the Deaf community in a culturally appropriate manner, as well as to increase the clubs visibility on campus. I firmly believe it is important to adapt to the students individual learning style and habits, therefore, my style is to adjust to the best method necessary in order to achieve success while learning. Many students are visual learners and prefer a hands on experience, whereas others could prefer oral, written or other teaching techniques in order to process the information.
