A Little Bit About Me...

I attended Northeastern Illinois University and obtained a B.A. degree in Elementary & Special Education, with honors. My first job, straight out of college was as an Educational Consultant. I trained teacher how to us computers to install educational programs for their students. After four years I was transfered to Florida. I resigned after a year and returned to Chicago. Around the mid 80's I relocated to Puerto Rico and work as a 3rd and 4th grade teacher. After two years I returned to Chicago and work in a respite care unit as a special education teacher. After two years, relocated again to Atlanta, Ga. It was there that I discovered my love for teaching kindergaten children and a 4th grade special education class. I decided to return to Chicago after a couple of years and teach at the preschool and kindergarten level; instead I became a director for a Head start program. T ... read more

My comments on tutoring Language Arts : I received a BA in English from The College of New Jersey, and afterwards worked for several years as a freelance contributor to a number of newspapers (especially Pioneer Press, a network of Chicago-area community papers) and magazines (especially Hybrid Magazine, an online music publication).

I believe in teaching in a relaxed and positive atmosphere that supports students' growth. Chess and writing/reading/English improvement are my primary objectives, and I believe strongly that improvement happens when the learning process is FUN. Students must enjoy learning in order to improve quickly! I have had great success in the past with this low-pressure approach.
Hello! My name is Dan, and I am an intermediate-level chess player who has four years of experience teaching chess to beginning students, and also an English teacher with six-plus years of experience teaching ESL in Taiwan. I am very passionate about my teaching and love to share what I've learned with my students! I have been playing chess for about six years, and have studied the game seriously for most of that time. I have raised my skill level to roughly 1500, and am very confident teaching the basics of ... read more

Language Arts is one of my top subjects!

PHILOSOPHY The key to education is to love what you do and I love what I do. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing students' progress. As I teach with love and I create a fun environment for students (using games to practice the language), students become involved and interested in the classroom. I have also tutored one-on-one and I prepare a lot of different activities for the class and exercises for the student to be able to practice the language when I'm not there. I encourage watching TV news programs to practice listening comprehension and the use of flash cards in order for the student to memorize some short phrases. I have been teaching Theology for 30 years. I studied at the Opus Dei and at the Argentine Catholic University I have tutoring children and adults for 30 years. I teach Spanish, ESL and basic French. I prepare exercises, activities, flash cards and reading m ... read more

I am not young enough to know everything

I agree with the concept that each person learns a bit differently, and even more so that as a tutor, I should try and find the most effective style for my tutee. My academic career also taught me the importance of setting time limits for each action item; and switching tasks to keep the mind sharp.
You will see from my resume below that I have strong experience in math, science, engineering and computers. It is worth mentioning that I am also skilled in english (5 on my AP World Lit exam) and art (voted most artistic in my senior high school class). I have also tutored at least 4 students in the past, and found it to be a successful and rewarding experience. Katharine P. Finding Your Inner Writer Effortlessly: Starts Here.

I began my college journey as an English major. I decided to switch to Elementary Education to be able to reach future writers before they lost the love for it. I have worked with all ages from toddlers to seniors in high school. I have been published in world wide devotional for women along with a world wide magazine. I have taught writing in schools to children who were struggling as well. Writing is who I am. My passion has been there since I first learned how to write in Kindergarten.
I am direct. I like to help the student find what is inside of them and write it. I am compassionate and challenging. There is an inner writer in all of us and I like to guide and help the student discover their true abilitiy effortlessly.

Special Education Teacher/Reading Specialist

I have been a special education teacher for 12 years. I recently received my Master of Arts in reading instruction degree. I have had a lot of success teaching students how to read. An example of this is: I started working, for 600 hrs (pull-out and push-in) a week, with a 2nd grade student at the end of January 2007. When I began working with him, he could only read 13 words. By the end of May, he knew 49 words
My teaching style is to find out what works best for the student and to use it that way.

A Little Bit About Me...

The prompt for this box (TEACHING STYLE) is ascinine in and of itself: tutoring-style is what it should read. And, please, forgive me, but either a tutor achieves results or a tutor does not.
I carry diplomas (and who really cares?) from Northern Illinois University in both Political Philosophy and English Literature, yada-yada-yada, and so on and so forth, etcetera, etcetera (graduated 2006). I have written two full-length novels that your children, most likely, will someday be required to read by some god-forsaken English teacher who does not believe in 'fun'. I could, of course, sit here, all day, listing all the reasons why you, or your child, should choose 'me' to guide them through life, and if not through life, then, at the very least, through whichever course they will most likely fail otherwise. Furthermore, and in spite of the fact that I do not understand this most bothe ... read more
