Learning math as a language brings tensions down and eases the students fears and inhibitions in feeling like "they should know this", no..that is not true. I ask the question...should you know how to speak French if your not from France? No? As a graduate of Andrews University, I was confronted with the task of completing a degree in the field of Engineering. I believe that teaching styles need to be flexible to the student. I have worked with a very wide variety of students, from the severely limited autistic youth to the highly gifted medical student. While approach and focus might vary for the individual or subject matter the essence remains the same. I try to envision at least 3 different ways of approaching a problem, I discuss material but let the students ask questions which I then tailor my explanations toward.
