A Little Bit About Me...

I generally use the Socratic method of teaching. It has a tendency to require the student to get involved in the learning process. it goes back to the theory that if you provide them a fish you eat for the day, teach them to fish and they eat forever. Although, if this is not successful, I have learned that students can learn, but some in different ways. I am available to help your child find academic success. I am patient, easy going, and considerate. I believe all students can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences. Tutoring the children over the last two years has been the most rewarding work for me. When a middle school child actually gets up, goes and gets a dictionary, and looks up the meaning, pronunciation, and spelling of a word, without having direction from me, it makes my heart sing. I am a first year Doctoral student at the University of Colorado Boulder. I was a TA last semester for the department of Journalism and Mass Communication, and I have six semesters of TA experience from Cornell University in the departments of Communication, History, Asian Studies, and Near Eastern Studies.
I am interested in this position both because I enjoy teaching and I have a strong interest in international communities. I spent a portion of last year in South Asia conducting fieldwork for my thesis and realized just how much capital language has in the social arena. When I returned from India, I began tutoring international school age children to improve their English language, particularly in writing assignments. I began working with children who were diagnosed with autism my first year of college (I did this for 7 years). I felt a sense of accomplishment as I watched them grow as people. I realized through these experiences that I wanted to help people learn and become accomplished. Later, I decided to student teach in graduate school. I taught three different writing courses over three years, including this past year as a part-time instructor. While I enjoyed my time teaching in a college classroom, I found myself making the most headway during conference time. In addition, I also worked as a writing tutor at MU's writing center.
