A Little Bit About Me...

I find that each person has a different learing style and try to find out what works for them. I also teach them that organization of thoughts and ideas are helpful in how they approach learning. I relate the subject matter to what is needed to learn and to something that they can relate to. I believein repetition and that all people can learn if someone takes the time to find out their individual learning style. A Little Bit About Me...

My area of expertise and greatest joy have always been reading and writing, from childhood on. My dual degree is in magazine journalism and linguistics. These skills have enabled me to work in the New York City publishing industry in a variety of editorial positions. Here in the capital district, my favorite job has been project manager at a language services provider, where I could use my French and even my Norwegian while placing and producing translations. My favorite volunteer job has been working in the classroom at my children’s elementary school, mentoring children as they worked on reading, math and special projects.

While in pursuit of my Masters degree, I was a writing tutor at the university's Writing Center. In this position, I worked with both undergraduate and graduate students. Upon graduation, I worked for the Institute of Reading Development where I worked with students (ages ranging from 4-years to adult) to help improve comprehension, absorption, and phonetic awareness.
I am a strong believer in the fact that all students learn in different ways and at their own pace. I am very empathetic and patient with my students. I like to consider myself "firm, yet fair" when the need may arise. One of the most gratifying experiences for me is seeing my student finally "get it"; that look of accomplishment on their face after the fact is payment in and of itself.

Before having children I worked as an teacher's aide at the local pre-school, working with 3-5 year-olds. After that I became a teacher's aid for the local middle school, working with children that were not allowed to go to regular classes due to their behavior. My main job was to show them how to write essays, reports, papers, etc. I also worked with their families as well and I loved it.
Working with children of all ages has taught me just how important education is. Reading and writing is especially important and they will need it in their everyday life.
