English Language Arts Teacher

I have currently spent over 350 hours in a variety of school settings. From private school to public, first grade to twelfth, I have seen it all. The majority of my experience has taken place in a suburban middle school, however I have also spent a reasonable ammount of time working with inner city high school students. I double majored in college to recieve a bachelors degree in literature and writing, and spent a full year interning at a student run newspaper as a journalist and copy editor. I have tutored middle school students with a variety of learning disabilities, as well as SAT prep for high school students. I am currently registered for a series of NYS tests to earn my certification to teach.
I believe that real learning takes place when students are actively engaged in the material. Finding the right materials to teach with will often inspire intrinsic motivation.

I find that each person has a different learing style and try to find out what works for them. I also teach them that organization of thoughts and ideas are helpful in how they approach learning. I relate the subject matter to what is needed to learn and to something that they can relate to. I believein repetition and that all people can learn if someone takes the time to find out their individual learning style. I find helping other learn and be successful very rewarding to me and would love the opportunity to do so with your students.

I am a people person, first and foremost. I enjoy getting to know families and children, and working together to create a learning environment that helps each student learn at his or her own pace. I like to look at challenges from many different angles, and I seek solutions as pieces to a puzzle. Enthusiasm and energy are two of my best points, but I can easily tailor my style to the atmosphere as needed. I believe that the tutor guides, but the child does the growing.
My area of expertise and greatest joy have always been reading and writing, from childhood on. My dual degree is in magazine journalism and linguistics. These skills have enabled me to work in the New York City publishing industry in a variety of editorial positions. A Little Bit About Me...

While in pursuit of my Masters degree, I was a writing tutor at the university's Writing Center. In this position, I worked with both undergraduate and graduate students. Upon graduation, I worked for the Institute of Reading Development where I worked with students (ages ranging from 4-years to adult) to help improve comprehension, absorption, and phonetic awareness.
I am a strong believer in the fact that all students learn in different ways and at their own pace. I am very empathetic and patient with my students. I like to consider myself "firm, yet fair" when the need may arise. One of the most gratifying experiences for me is seeing my student finally "get it"; that look of accomplishment on their face after the fact is payment in and of itself.

A Little Bit About Me...

Working with children of all ages has taught me just how important education is. Reading and writing is especially important and they will need it in their everyday life. Every child deserves a good education and nothing would make me happier than to provide that to them. I am a caring person, always putting myself last. I am hardworking and patient. When working with others, children or co-workers, I put my focus on them especially when they need me. I always do my best and will not stop or give up on any child for any reason. They are our future.
Before having children I worked as an teacher's aide at the local pre-school, working with 3-5 year-olds. After that I became a teacher's aid for the local middle school, working with children that were not allowed to go to regular classes due to their behavior. My main job was to show them how to write essays, reports, papers, etc. I als ... read more

I think it is more important to understand the student than to understand the material. Don't get me wrong - as a teacher I always re-educate myself to the material if need be - but I feel my real strength as an educator lies in finding a new way to teach the same concept. If a student is failing to learn, it is less often the material itself and more often the way it is being presented. Finding a new way is something I have practiced in school and at BOCES, and is my greatest strength as a teacher.
I hold an English degree from a program that largely overlapped with Education - basically, I have studied teaching as a student at college. On the other end of the spectrum, I have been a substitute educator for Capital Region BOCES for 3 years, working with teaching professionals on short-term assignments. Through this experience I believe I have gathered a good deal of craft in the a ... read more

I believe in the "practice makes perfect" approach, especially when it comes to math, science, and language study. That said, I also believe that practice can be interesting, fun, encouraging and reinforcing. I would hope to help a student figure out how to learn and approach new challenges with confidence and enthusiasm. Sometimes what a child needs most is to simply understand that he or she is capable of achieving. Instilling self-affirmation is an extremely important part of teaching, and that would be my goal in working with your child.

I have obtained my Master's Degree in Philosophy and Critical Thought from the French University "Paris VIII". My primary experience has been in politics and philosophy, and has contained, as non-academic experience, involvement in small political groups dealing with specific issues affecting society at large. Learning philosophy has meant a strong knowledge of the English as well as French languages, including a strong background in European history dealing primarily with the period slightly before the French Revolution in France up to the present day, including spots of history in Europe previous to 1775.
I am very open and affable. I have a strong sense of humor and am in no case a hard disciplinarian. What's important is that I believe in sharing knowledge with as many people as is possible. I believe that knowledge belongs to everyone who seeks it. And I believe anyone i ... read more
