I was in a program called "Study Buddies" all four years at high school. I would devote a couple afternoons a week tutoring middle school students (and eventually high school students). During this time I would help them study for tests, complete assigned work, or help clarify any material that the student didn't understand. Also, I helped these students develop their writing and grammar skills. Starting my junior and senior year of high school, I began "one on one" tutoring with selected individuals. Study buddies was a program where several students would show up and the helpers would assist accordingly, but when I began tutoring I specifically met with them at assigned times. I believe that every child has the ability to be a successful learner, and I enjoy watching my students grow and improve at different paces. My goal is to make each child feel comfortable in their learning environment, while challenging each student according to their level of ability. I began my teaching career as a piano teacher in 1994, taught a pre-piano bells class & obtained licensure in Kindermusik in 1996. I obtained a BM in Piano Pedagogy in 1997. I then went out east to nanny for identical twins with Down Syndrome for a year which gave me experience with children not only academically but on a day to day basis as well as rooted me well in understanding children with special needs. I then completed a BS degree in Elementary Education & was a substitute for the school district for over 7 years. I have also been teaching piano lessons privately for 7 years now. I am currently involved in the public school system as a Literacy Tutor for grades k-3. I have earned a BA in Journalism and English and have decided to continue on to pursue my Masters degree in Education. I have been trained in specific reading strategies that can help improve fluency, phonemic awareness, and phonics; as well as vocabulary and text comprehension.
