As a long-term adjunct instructor, I have successfully cultivated an effective set of best teaching practices relative to the English language and Communications. I make every conscious attempt to relate to my students as individuals and to meet their educational needs. Additionally, I exert much effort with students to impress upon them the importance of education in their lives and the fact that learning can be totally fun.
I find it rewarding to teach children and adults the necessary skills that allow them to obtain full English literacy. One of the greatest accomplishments in the course of the educational process is the acquisition of full, quality literacy; it is the foundation. Consequently, I prefer a step-by-step, pragmatic method of teaching English language skills: phonics, words, syllables, consonants, verbs, sentences, punctuation, grammar, etc.

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout college, I held myself to a high educational standard, and maintained a 3.92 GPA. I majored in music, minored in chemistry, and completed extensive coursework in the math and science areas. Since graduation, I have worked in the chemical field, and possess a firm knowledge of the field of math and science and excellent writing and reading comprehension skills. I tutored during high school and college, and worked as a tutor in the campus Academic Support Lab during the last two years of my college career, tutoring students in the arts, music, sciences, mathematics, English, history, philosophy, and literature. I also tutored many students with learning disabilites such as autism and ADD/ADHD.
I firmly believe that every student can learn, given the proper environment and instruction. I make it a point to listen to my students and try to see intellectual confusion and ... read more

More About This Tutor...

The primary obligation of a tutor is to show the pupil that big, intimidating chunks of academic work, whether they be assignments, units, or even entire classes, can be broken down into logical sequences of more manageable parts. To accomplish that, I focus first on my demeanor. When struggling in school, it is easy to panic, and if the tutor is relaxed, calm, and deliberate, then that catches on and the session can proceed in a level-headed manner. Also, I make sure that the sessions are reliably structured. We look first at the syllabus, then at the assignment at hand, and articulate what exactly needs to be accomplished. After that, we lay out a road map and proceed in a step-by-step fashion until the work is done.

My teaching style is one of discipline and at the same time hands-on. Students must feel the relevance of the world around them in order to gain an understanding of what's being taught. I work with the individual but never let the focus off of the competition that's waiting. Students must understand that learning is an every day, every moment experience. It's all about how they see the world around them. I love teaching and working with children. The "aha" moment is what I live for. I believe that EVERY student can achieve what they set their mind to with guidance and persistence.
In a nutshell, I taught high school English for eleven years. I am passionate about all facets of education in the classroom and the real world. I have much to offer my students whether it be a love of literature, grammar and vocabulary or life itself! I love to teach.

My teaching style is a collage of teaching styles. I am well aware that students retain and use information in numerous ways. Sometimes, I facilitate from the side, allowing the students to take hands on control with the information, at other periods, I might lecture on the topic and then question and discuss issues provided from what was just read. One just has to be acquainted with the learners' style and then the subject, lesson plan, and displaying of information can be customized more suitedly, to the student. Any student can learn, they just have to have the information provided to them in a manner where they can retain it and make it useful.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching philosophy involves connecting with individual students. One of my strengths is identifying strong points in a student’s performance and teaching him to tap into successful facets of his/her performance. In English, I was trained in (and advocate) “Faulkner English” as developed by Claude Faulkner and taught at the University of Arkansas. This method employs a certain amount of deconstruction of sentences, beginning with the most simple, and can be geared to any level. In French, I do use some repetition, and, yes, memorizing conjugations, as a means of making material available to the student. I also use linguistic games, skits, simple verses and play, when appropriate.
I have taught either French or English, either in the classroom or as a private tutor, since 1989, when I was recruited as an undergraduate to teach Elementary French. For the next 5 years I taught ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am an award-winning journalist and editor with 10 years of experience. I graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's degree in journalism. I also concentrated on English, political science and history while in school. While in college, I was the teaching assistant for advanced reporting and advanced editing, two capstone classes for a bachelor's degree. In those positions, I mentored students one-on-one, and I helped them improve their writing and editing skills. Since graduation, I have volunteered as a teacher for religious school, and I also freelance as an editor for several professional publications. I earned a 31 on the ACT and a 780 on SAT II: Writing.
I absolutely love learning and helping others accomplish their goals (just ask my husband, who I've helped hold down a full-time job while going back to school). I also love studying for tests and make exam pre ... read more
