Teaching and School Counseling Services In One Place!

My style of education is to teach by modeling. Students need to see things in a step-by-step format with instructions, followed by an immediate example. I also provide sample argumentative essays for students who learn by seeing a complete model. My counseling style is to work with students, first by building a rapport and then using that as the foundation to get a feel for their college/career interests. I then look at their grades to help them build a custom transitional plan into early adulthood.
I have been a teacher for the last fifteen years. I teach social studies, but my specialization is teaching argumentative (college level) writing.I have done plenty of SAT prep and tutoring for students at the high school and college level. I am also a school counselor and can offer a vast array of services including FASFA, Naviance/Common Application and college/career counseling.

All Politics is Local

Socratic
The Thrill of the Teacher teaching his material is his repetition in the work, further gaining mastery over what he is covering. Often times its the student who is teaching more to the teacher, than the teacher could ever teach to all his students. With that experience, however comes greater opportunities along the way.

More About This Tutor...

I think that relating a particular subject to a student is the best way to spark their interest and draw them in as learners. Often students do not learn the significance of what they are learning therefore they disconnect themselves from the material. I want to help students care about their education and teach them that any subject can be your best subject when you give it your all.
I have cultivated strong writing and analytical skills in my college career at UConn. I took a variety of classes that requried me to articulate myself through research papers, poems, lab reports, and speeches. While at UConn I volunteered with a local congregation helping non English speaking individuals learn how to speak conversational English.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all students learn in their own way and that a teacher must get to know his or her students in order to evaluate their strengths and specific needs. It is important to give students guidance, but also to teach them to work independently to boost their self-confidence. I constantly seek feedback from my students and their parents to find the best way to help them succeed.
As a graduate of Yale University, I recognize the value of education for the generation of young people who will soon run our country. For the past year, I have tutored students in a wide variety of subject areas: English, History, Geometry, Biology, Spanish, French, and SAT prep. I moved to California with nothing more than a suitcase and a desire to see new places. While I was there I was fortunate enough to work with a group of formerly incarcerated young women who were affiliated with the Center for Young Women’s Development. I created a writing workshop geared toward teaching these women to use their voices and to use writing as an outlet. When I returned to Connecticut, I enrolled in the Internship program at the University of Bridgeport and I have just completed my second Master’s. During my Internship I spent a lot of time helping students with their assignments in the library and in the classroom.
I strive to facilitate student-centered learning and to be accessible to my students. I love to motivate reluctant learners and share my enthusiasm for written and spoken language. I am calm, patient and kind and never offer constructive criticism without ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that a love of school and learning begins with confidence in one's own abilities. Some find it easy, and others need a certain dose of encouragement and guidance to gain that self-assurance. As a tutor, I think it’s important to provide consistent practice and celebrate small successes so that the student rediscovers how good it feels to do well. In addition to regular exercises, I take the time to explain how and why things work and what their applications are in life outside school. I believe that this helps the student understand the rationale behind their efforts and can spark more enthusiasm to learn. I also try to identify each student’s special talents and incorporate them into my curriculum. That way, they can learn to identify what they are good at and how to apply those skills to any subject.
I have always loved to teach – even as a child in front of a tiny bla ... read more
