Organic Chemistry is one of my top subjects! I received my BS in chemistry and my MS, Ph.D, and post-doctoral education in organic chemistry. Since 1998, my academic career has allowed me to teach chemistry to a wide variety of audiences, from high school students to assistant professors. During my tutoring sessions, I have noticed that assessing the student’s preference of learning is of upmost importance. This basic inquiry then allows me to tailor the session to their specific needs. Typically, I make use of everyday objects to help facilitate the student’s comprehension of the course material.

My name is Jason Dinsmore and I am the creator of Organic Chemist On Call (OrganicChemistOnCall.com). I first began teaching chemistry in 1998, and I have been doing so ever since. I decided to create this online and in-person tutoring service in October of 2011 in order to provide students with help in organic chemistry on their time. I started with a dry erase whiteboard, a webcam, and one student in North Carolina. Now, I have been fortunate enough to have tutored all around the world! I never thought it would grow into what it is today. My intention is to provide the highest quality of education on your schedule. I understand that students these days are swamped with many academic and extracurricular activities. Therefore, I want to make sure that you have every opportunity to maximize your potential. My overall goals are: To make it easier and more accessible for studen ... read more

Learning as an Individual, Believing in Your Value

Have worked with elementary age children and have tutored/mentored in the workplace. With many years of work experience with employees of varying skill levels, I understand what it takes to be a valued contributor and understand that students learn in very different ways. Creating a relationship with information that is meaningful to the student is the best way to help them learn a concept or process. Most learning focuses on information assimilation while I focus on applying the concept or process to a real work situation that has meaning to the student.
Discovery with emphasis on individual learning style - for instance tactical or visual instead of instructional - also have worked with kids who have emotional issues or self image issues that hold them back from learning - interested in working with kids who are in need of a someone who sees them as an individual

Organic Chemistry is one of my top subjects!

I solve problems. I am a bioanalytical chemist and biomedical engineer. This profession requires using math, statistics, biology and chemistry at a high level on a daily basis as I develop products that improve healthcare. I have taught or tutored science and math from elementary to post-college level for over 25 years in diverse settings.
Student-led and interactive. No lectures. No drudgery. I focus on the process of solving problems. Restate the question. Draw diagrams. Figure out what information is missing. How can I get that information? Can it be calculated or is an estimate good enough? What sources are reliable?

As a tutor, I try to identify the learning strategies of my students and then build off of those. For example, if I notice that a student is a visual learner, then I will try to incorporate diagrams, models, and schematics that can assist the student in understanding the subject matter or solving the problem. If, on the other hand, a student learns best by reading, then I will provide step by step instructions of how to find answers to various problems, or provide guidance as to how to identify important elements from a text. In any event, I try to show students several different strategies for learning or for approaching a given problem and let them determine which one makes the best sense to them.
During my doctoral studies at UCSD, I began to tutor professionally as a way to earn extra income. It seemed like a logical choice for a part-time job as I had been helping friends ... read more

When I approach a student I've never worked with, my first priority is to make them feel comfortable by letting them see that I am a very nice, friendly, and compassionate person that they might like to have as a friend. Next I try to get them to tell me about themselves in some way (what they've been working on, their favorite subjects) to try to encourage them to speak freely with me about what they're thinking. Then, after personal rapport is established, I begin my academic approach to tutoring by finding out how they think based on their interests or common themes, and I try to connect the material to these things. Children have trouble learning, often because the addressed concepts don't relate to their lives. I strive to connect the material to them, demonstrate its influence on their interests, and allow them to greet the academic engagement as some sort of useful tool, not a ... read more

I have several teaching styles, and I typically adjust my style to better fit the student. For those students that crave discipline, I try to be very proactive and actively assign homework for them to finish prior to learning. For those students who have better self control, I try to stand back a little bit to let them develop their own creativity. Regardless of the teaching styles I may use, I am always accessible and patient. I always try my hardest to help the student to exceed.
I have always known that I enjoy teaching others. In fact, I started teaching others almost as soon as I finished myself. While my degree is in Environmental Science, I have extensive background in both biology and chemistry. I was a peer leader and tutor for organic chemistry. Furthermore, I currently work for Duke University as a laboratory manager. One of my key responsibility is teaching undergraduat ... read more

I am a very patient person, a trait which I believe is very beneficial for a tutor to possess. I am always patient when teaching, and in doing so have succeeded in getting my point across. I like to pass on small tricks and acronyms that I have came up with for many things, some of which I have still retained to this day for my own personal use, not just for school work.
Since I am an engineering student, I have always been interested and excelled in math and science, so I have tutored many kids in all areas of science and mathematics. I have also tutored in Spanish and French. Last year, I worked with a young man who had dyslexia. I have helped kids of all ages, whether at the elementary, high school, or collegiate level.

I am a very energetic person and try to bring that to everything that I do. I am also very concerned with providing students with an understanding of the concept behind what they are learning and what the real-world applications of those concepts are. I feel that it is the key to engage students by making them see the benefits of their education in the long run.

I love working with all children. I enjoy changing my style to fit the specific need of the child and helping them in the way they learn the best. I want to be able to help them learn to become independent problem solvers. A Little Bit About Me...

My previous teaching experience and training qualify me to provide outstanding service to students in this community. The rigorous academic curriculum I completed as an English major and Chemistry minor at Duke University cultivated study skills and learning strategies that helped me to excel. As a Phi Beta Kappa graduate, I not only applied these strategies to achieve personal success, but also volunteered to tutor elementary and middle school students with America Reads and at the Kings Park Life Center. As a Math Understanding through the Science of Life (MUSCLE) teaching fellow, I taught innovative science lessons to middle school students and received training about the unique styles of learners. My teaching style is a mixture of direct instruction and discovery based learning whose components depend on the student(s) at hand. I've been known to make generalized lesson plans and improvise as I go, because every class is different, and too strict of a plan is destructive and boring for the students. Students typically need things explained to them in many different ways to garner a solid understanding of any topic, but especially upper level math and physics. Therefore, I pride myself on using any props, explanations, or examples that I can come up with to get the point across. At the same time, I tailor each lesson to the speed of the student(s) and the time constraints of the situation, varying the amount of direct vs. discovery learning accordingly, and making sure that the lines of communication between myself and the student are wide open so I can continually assess their ... read more
