I am a strong believer in teaching a student how to learn. By that I mean, students not only need to know a specific subject matter but also how to aquire and use knowledge. I received a bachelors degree from The University of Memphis in integrative studies in the fall of 2009. Upon graduation, I was required to complete two semesters of student teaching. Also, during my four years of college, I tutored three different students, one in reading and the other two in English. From August 2009 through January 2011, I was employed at a child care facility where I was director but spent most of my time tutoring and assisting the after school kids with their homework and projects. I challenge the students by raising a question or writing a problem on the board and asking students to share their ideas with me . This provides the students with the opportunity to think about the problem on their own, to determine their own strategy. During the discussion, they also have the advantage of seeing other ways of approaching the problem. When the problem proves too challenging, I usually give them small step by step hints and direct them to the answer. I also make sure that we spend enough time discussing all the ideas suggested by students, not limiting the discussion to the ones I know are correct or most effective.
