I first discovered my love of teaching when I was in the Boy Scouts teaching younger scouts skills like building a fire or pitching a tent. In high school, I would tutor my classmates in English, a subject in which I have always excelled. I am most interested in studying history and geography, and I long to share what I have learned. I have discovered that every students is capable of achieving greatness if someone will take the time and effort to learn their learning style. I pride myself in being able to break things down to the most basic levels if necessary in order to reach a student. Often you have to know a child's personality, background, and home life in order to understand what he or she relates to. I don't believe in teaching a subject, I believe in teaching a student. I believe that children learn in numerous ways, so as an educator it is my responsibility to provide multiple experiences - visual, oral, tactile, etc. A person walking by my classroom would see children smiling, working in groups, accomplishing projects, and would hear noise.
After graduating from Vanderbilt University I taught 5th grade for 2 years while working on my Master's at TSU. I then moved to the Knoxville area and taught K until my son was born in 2000. I've worked as the VP of Internal Audit and Credit for a Federal Savings Bank, the Director of Finance for a National Bank, a Senior Financial Analyst, and the CFO/Controller for a smaller company. I am well versed in any financial or accounting matter than you may need help with.
I believe in using humor and matter of fact conversation style is the best way to teach. If you get someone interested in what you have to say then they will usually want to learn it and retain it almost effortlessly.
