I am structured yet kind. Kids need to feel a connection to their teacher in order to give 100%. I work a great deal on building community in my classroom and allowing kids to appreciate the diversity among themselves. Not all kids are going to excel in all areas. They need to value what they are really good at and share that with their peers. This also creates miniature "experts" which makes all kids feel good. Once a child feels successful; in one area it encourages them to tackle something they are less comfortable with.

Writing is one of my top subjects! There are few things I love more than teaching someone the basics of composing a strong essay, editing their drafts, and seeing understanding click in their eyes. I went to school for journalism, but I took an array of writing classes. I use this experience to meet the needs and talents of the students I encounter.

I prefer a very conversational approach with my students. The style encourages mutual respect and allows me to observe more closely how the student learns. In addition, I feel learning is absorbed better when the information is couched in a story, and I believe conversation is a style of storytelling.
I have years of experience in varying forms of educations, but my most relevant is the two years (2012-2014) I lived in South Korea, teaching elementary and middle school students in English as a foreign language at a private academy. During that time period, I also tutored two adults in conversation, vocabulary, and diction. I believe that children learn best when the material is most tangible to them. When teaching or tutoring, I make a huge effort to incorporate the students' names into math problems. I make it my goal to find out as much as I can about the students, and then put them in those environments in an imaginative way in some sort of math problem. I am extremely patient with my students, and appreciate gaining knowledge from their statements and insights. When appropriate, manipulatives are wonderful tools as well.
