A Little Bit About Me...

I think that in today's public education system, with ever-growing class sizes some students get thrown to the wayside. These students need a more personalized learning plan that offers them head-to-head or small group discussions. I can relate to the child who remains silent because he doesn't think his question is smart enough. Subsequently, that child starts getting left behind little by little until they feel completely lost and abandoned and become disillusioned with the whole education system. My hope is to convince some of these children that they can make their educations work for them and maybe even become the child in class that begins to want to help others learn and grow.

I graduated college in 1985 and then pursued many different jobs over the last 25 years. My degree in History/Political Science allowed me to be something of a jack-of-all trades in respect to my career. I have done both office work and factory work as well as customer service. However, my last job is perhaps most relevant to this position, because I was in South Korea for 3 1/2 years teaching English to South Korean children ages 5 to 15. Even though I do not possess formal training or certification in the United States, I learned hands on and developed my own teaching style that was both effective and fun for the kids so that they learned alot, and my boss was happy.

Since childhood, my hunger for knowledge has driven me to study and learn about almost as much as I possibly could. My high estimation of learning has often led me to help others to learn whenever I can. Always drawn to math and science, I pursued chemistry in college and received my B.S. from North Carolina State University in Chemistry in 2002. In grade school and high-school I was always looked to by my fellow students for help and explanation of many topics. I am a huge supporter of the idea that anyone can learn anything that they desire. With that being said, it seems that there should be no problem with students learning mathematics; but there is. Many children have no desire to learn mathematics because they see no relevance for it in their daily lives. I very much enjoy working with children and when I tutor, I enjoy making math more fun and relevant for them. I strongly believe that the success of education depends on how well it targets a student's learning style and values. Everyone can learn, but individual attention is a vital part of that. We don't all learn the same way or at the same speed, and these differences should be addressed in a positive and creative way to both convey the subject material and strengthen a student's ability to learn in the future.
I received my B.A. in English from Appalachian State University where I also received training in education.
