More About This Tutor...

As a high school student, I was very active in extracurricular activities. I participated in the rotary club, volunteering at local soup kitchens. I was also a member of the Newspaper, Quiz Bowl, Robotics Team, soccer and baseball throughout my high school career. Through volunteering at the Boys and Girls club, I was turned out to tutoring students in Algebra and Trigonometry. I spent my Junior and Senior year tutoring students in these areas of mathematics.
I think that in today's public education system, with ever-growing class sizes some students get thrown to the wayside. These students need a more personalized learning plan that offers them head-to-head or small group discussions. I can relate to the child who remains silent because he doesn't think his question is smart enough. I like working with children of all ages. I believe that children of all ages and cultural backgrounds can learn if given a proper chance. I even managed to teach children in South Korea, when I didn't speak Korean at all and my students had limited English skills. I taught them through games and use of our workbooks and student books. I believe in making learning a fun experience with lots of games and an easy going manner. If the kid is bored or unhappy, it is going to make it much harder for the child to learn. I try to also reach my students at the level where they are at. If a student is at a lower level of understanding, I will start with them there and slowly challenge and build them to a higher level.
I graduated college in 1985 and then pursued many different jobs over the last 25 years. My degree in History/Political Science allowed me to be something of a jack-of ... read more

I begin teaching each tutee by first observing their own approach to studying, listening to their explanations and questions about the material, and indentifying their strengths and deficincies with respect to knowledge of the subject. Then I attempt to mold my approach based on these observations, course requirements, and my own personal belief that we are all capable of learning most anything as long as it is presented to us in a way we can understand and that is enjoyable and exciting for the student.
Since childhood, my hunger for knowledge has driven me to study and learn about almost as much as I possibly could. My high estimation of learning has often led me to help others to learn whenever I can. Always drawn to math and science, I pursued chemistry in college and received my B.S. from North Carolina State University in Chemistry in 2002. In grade school and high-school I w ... read more
