A Little Bit About Me...

I grew up reading the nutritional panel on everything. I was absolutely fascinated how the body used the food that we eat to derive the energy and perform the tasks necessary for life. This interest in the human body led me to pursue a degree in nutrition. I recently graduated Brigham Young University the honored graduate of my college with a BS in Nutritional Science. Due to the nature of my degree, I have an extensive knowledge in the fields of biology, chemistry, anatomy/physiology, and nutrition. I am not, however, limited to these subjects. I have had approximately four years of tutoring experience for Alpine and Provo School Districts ranging from English, German, Statistics, to Algeba, Biology, and History.

A Little Bit About Me...

While pursuing my own studies in college, I realized that I not only love learning but that I love to increase learning in others as well. Because of this, I spent many hours throughout college volunteering to tutor calculus and chemistry students. During my last two years of college, I worked as a chemistry teaching assistant, a position that allowed me to teach chemistry to groups of 25 college students. As evidence of my effectiveness and clarity in teaching, I won four undergraduate teaching awards during this period. As I prepared for Medical School, I wanted to achieve the most possible out of my undergraduate experience at Brigham Young University. I chose Biology as my major, knowing that it would challenge me. I took several courses in Biology and Chemistry in which I performed very well. I understand how frustrating the concepts in these subjects can be, so patience is what is needed to grasp them. I have helped several fellow classmates comprehend the concepts needed to do well on their exams and retain the information for the future.
I feel that repetition is one key that helps students grasp difficult concepts. I start by helping the student understand what the question is asking. I have been a classroom teacher for the last 18 years. I have taught in both Public Junior High and High Schools, as well as Private School. I love teaching science, and love to make the class exciting. It really gets students going when you use current events to teach and when kids debate issues, it is a great learning opportunity!
I think all children are driven to learn, and if directed with a little help, everyone can learn how science changes peoples lives. I feel more like a coach and less like a lecturer. If you can make connections between things they know, and the things you are trying to teach them, they will have something to "hang" that new knowledge on!
