Spanish is one of my top subjects! I began studying Spanish in middle school and have never stopped. Spanish was my second major in university. My love for the language has brought me to live in Costa Rica, where I have been living since 2012. I am currently pursuing my Masters in translation at Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, a requirement for which is fluency in both English and Spanish. Being a nonnative speaker, I can offer you my insight into how I learned and mastered the Spanish language, especially the tricky grammar.

Fall 2011 - ESOL Tutor - I met weekly with an ESL peer in my university to teach her English communication skills, specifically in the area of articulation and language. July-November 2012 - English Tutor - Through Universidad Nacional's Exchange program, I met weekly with university-aged peers to strengthen their English conversational skills and grammatical concepts. I taught four individual students. 43 hours completed. September-December 2012 - TEFL Teaching Practicum - I planned and taught English classes in grammar, conversation and American English pronunciation to adults in Heredia, Costa Rica, as part of my coursework for certification by the International TEFL Academy & INTESOL Worldwide. 20 hours completed. Hands-on, smiles-on!

I am very laid back and flexible. While I might be calm I only have 3 rules, 1. Be respectful, 2. the words "I can't" are not allowed :), and 3. have fun! I tend to create games based on the skills that are being taught and I'm not into lecturing, my approach is very hands. Learning can be fun!
Hey! My names Bethy! I'm 13 years old and in 8th grade. I've been tutoring since I was in 5th grade. I can tutor all ages in almost any subject. Last year I had the highest GPA in my whole school! I love teaching anyone who is willing to learn! I also teach children with learning disabilities and special needs.

I’m a nurturer, with a strong belief in the relational basis of learning. I strive to understand each student’s learning style and incorporate brain-based methods in my teaching. As a linguist, I was trained in the communicative approach, but still adhere to good, old-fashioned grammar and vocabulary work. I have a passion for literature and find it invaluable in teaching both native and foreign language.
I taught Spanish to undergraduate students at the University of Arizona for one year after college. I was a home educator for children from zero to three. I have taught and tutored elementary-aged students as an aide, literacy volunteer and day-care provider. I have taught English as a second language to adult learners. I currently volunteer as a garden educator with elementary-aged children.

A Little Bit About Me...

My passion for Earth Science has lead me to pursue a Master's degree with the hopes of a career change in my future. I am currently a Product Manager, where training staff memebers is a vital part of my job. I would love to use this experience to assist students in a subject area I am excited and comfortable with.
As a parent, I teach in some way everyday. I have learned patience and the importance of repetition and positive feedback. I would love to teach other children, or high school students, about the Earth and its complicated, but awe inspiring processes. Sometimes it just takes one on one attention for a child to gain understanding and confidence in a subject.

I have always felt the need and want to help others, whether educationally or socially. As an immigrant who had to learn a new educational system, language, and lifestyle, I know first-hand how difficult a true and successful learning process can be. I believe that my strong communication skills and a patient persona are critical in helping someone achieve educational success. In recognizing each child's individual skills and abilities, I only hope to help them recognize their own strengths and weaknesses to achieve improvement.
My love for reading and writing from a young age followed me through high school and college. By excelling in various courses, I had the opportunity to tutor a myriad of subjects in high school (particularly Science and Writing), and serve as a Writing Consultant at Bryant University since Freshman year. Outside of school, I have also assisted my friends a ... read more

My experience in the field of tutoring is personal. I do not have formal previous experience with a formal institution that provides me with students to tutor- instead- my love and passion for reading, writing and literature in general has driven me to tutor friends and family concerning this subject matter. My BA from Wheaton College has given me the necessary background needed to be an influencial tutor in these (and other!) areas. I was just certified as a Yoga Teacher in June of 2010, and though this may seem unrelated, my passion for yoga has further sharpened my communication skills, also preparing me to suceed in this field.
As the oldest of five children I not only love children, but I have a life-time long experience with them. I have babysat for years in my spare time- I am great at communicating and connecting with children. The connection factor is what I believe to be ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I greatly enjoy finding a way to inspire a child to understand the problem at hand. Through from my experience in grade school and my observation of students that attend tough schools I've realized the monotonous class schedule and disciplinary philosophy of most schools deflates most student's desire to succeed. While I can relate to this rebellious reaction I also know that it is no excuse for not trying very hard in school because the main path to success as a young adult is a high school diploma with excellent grades. I am very patient and friendly with students of all abilities.
A diverse education at Wesleyan University has prepared me to tutor many high school subjects. I earned my BA at Wesleyan in Music but I almost double majored in Environmental Science. The high expectations of professors at Wesleyan pushed me to greatly improve my writing ability, with my music th ... read more

I am a strong believer that children all learn differently. I consider myself a visual learner, but try to teach to cater all different learning styles. I believe children learn best when able to relate to the material in some way. I try my best to discover the individual child's learning style and personal interests early on and then adjust my approach accordingly. It is then that the student becomes confident in learning, which promotes success. I also believe that learning is very active on both the part of the teacher and students and that tutoring is a shared experience. My background enables me to first develop a relationship with the child, show them support, and then dive into the academics together.

I received my BS in civil engineering from a liberal arts university in Boston, MA ranked among the Top 30 universities in the nation, according to US News. My well-rounded education gave me the skills to communicate mathematical ideas and science concepts to any audience, including children. Now I am pursuing a masters degree in secondary math education in hopes of engaging and inspiring students to gain a better understanding of mathematics, and thus build their overall self-confidence. As an engineering student, I had experience empowering students by leading and working at science camps and tutoring at local elementary schools through a literacy corps.

Personally, I am a firm believer in the constructivist, or active learning theory. I view myself as a facilitator, presenting opportunities for students to bridge material to their own lives through personal experiences and interactions. By supporting this theory, I place the responsibility on the student as the one who must take initiative in his or her own learning, as each child brings an entirely unique perspective and experience to the classroom. By acknowledging students’ diverse backgrounds as context through which students navigate in order to construct meaning, I allow for multiple viewpoints and interpretations of content. Constructivist theory also promotes active dialogue and peer collaboration as students internalize outside ideas, whether they be newly represented in a text or by an alternate perspective of a fellow classmate. Content, no matter the subject area, must beco ... read more

As a University of Connecticut graduate, I was very driven by my passion for the sciences. I earned a BS in pathobiology with a minor in molecular and cell biology. I was a well rounded student which has afforded me skills in math, psychology, and English. I have worked as a rowing coach for many years and have the patience and drive to help you reach academic goals.
Teaching comes second nature to me. I believe that all students can learn, but each person requires a different style of instruction in order to fully understand the subject. I provide multiple kinds of instruction while keeping a patient and easy going mentality. It is my goal to help each student not only come to understand the subject, but be able to apply it in real life settings. This type of teaching can make a difference in each of my students' lives.
