An understanding tutor

The teaching style that I have always promoted is to recognize that everyone learns on a different level and at a different pace. Therefore, a step by step instructor is needed and that instructor has to know how to meet that individual needs based on what they know not what I know. You find alot of college professors teach lessons based on what they know and their experience not realizing that the some students learn at different paces. I experienced this as both an undergraduate and graduate student but I had to go through it or drop the class.
I have worked with all grade levrls as substitute school teacher with range from pre k to 12th grade and worked for a tutoring company while turoring an elementary student in math. Experience tutoring math to elementary age children through adults in college. I have earned a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Mexico, and I am working on completing pre-med requirements at the University of Houston Clear Lake. I have completed 15 credit hours in Biological Sciences with a GPA of 4.0. I also have two years of experience as a community mentor, working with elementary school children.
I enjoy teaching children. I normally have a very relaxed style, but I emphasize setting goals and completing the task at hand. I gain a great deal of personal satisfaction in helping others learn. I believe the most important attributes of a good teacher are, 1. keeping the student's best interest in mind, and 2. maintaining a positive attitude and keeping the learning process interesting for the student.

Throughout college and graduate school I've always driven myself to be at the top of my class. I have earned a bachelors, MS, and PhD in Psychology, which has not only helped develop my interpersonal skills, but has also made me well versed in grammar and writing research papers not only for class, but for publication in scientific journals as well. In the last eight years I have tutored students in statistics, English, psychology, basic math, and science.
The most important thing I've learned over the last 10 years is that children do not all learn the same way. For some children I need to think outside the box and come up with a creative way of explaining a concept in order for the child to understand. I want children to experience academic success and will take the time to patiently explain concepts that may be particularly difficult. I believe that with the appropriate env ... read more

I believe the key to academic success is ensuring the student feels a sense of accomplishment and pride in self. My method of teaching focuses on determining the best learning style and beginning with lessons that will bring about success, and then challenging the student gradually. I try to make learning fun, while encouraging questions and an "out-of-the-box" approach to problem solving. The ultimate goal is to develop an independent and motivated learner.
I currently work as a professional science/health writer, and I have a keen grasp of literature comprehension, grammar, and composition. I have tutored students in English, math, and science.
