I have a passion for learning, and a love of all types of diversity. I thrive in one-on-one and small group scenarios where I can identify the learning styles and strengths of each child, and cater to their individuality. When I taught swimming one summer at the YMCA, I quickly became the favored instructor for kids aged 3-8, especially those in the extremes: fearful and fearless. The fearful children needed to be coaxed into confidence so that they could feel safe and proud to succeed at their own pace, while the fearless children needed firm but loving boundaries to ground them in safety and discipline so that they could be freed up to push themselves to their full potential.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of Sociology I have gained a lot of knowledge about how society functions. I was interested in this area of study to understand peoples because I have always had compassion for others. I have participated in a 4 unit class where i taught Spanish to 8-11 year old children and it consisted of developing a plan that included songs and dancing to learn Spanish in a fun and animated way. I have done research on homelessness, and had an internship with a non profit that provides social services for those in need. Working closely with this organization has helped me assess peoples needs and use problem solving skills to help individuals in a variety of situations.

I have always drawn and painted. I put myself through college and taught one year at Vandenberg Middle School. I had then fallen in love with Los Olivos. I then went on through the years to open 2 art galleries and a frame shop. I have always taught art on the side such as life drawing, beginning drawing and children's private and adult classes. I continue to teach my own daughter to draw and paint. We attend the Art galleries and The Santa Barbara Art Museum and have a great time. I am 54 and full of teaching information. Conversational. From what I learned in Taiwan little kids are not for me. This is the truth. Kids at about 14 or 15 and older are much preferred. I don't think I am animated enough for younger children...well, not a GROUP of younger children anyway. When it comes to one on one though, it is much different I am sure. I like to give ideas on how to sound out words, remember grammar/math tricks and things like that.
I double majored in Biology and English with a Bachelor of Science degree from a very well known, highly esteemed University in Wisconsin. I went to Taiwan for two months from March-May 2010 and helped teach in a "Bushiban" or cram school to kids aged 6-15. I am currently looking for a full-time job relating to my degree.
