My primary goal is to help students understand the "why" of studies. "Why" do we look for differentials in calculus? "Why" do we describe imagery in poetry instead of just saying how we feel? "Why" do we enter compound keys in some SQL tables but not others? "Why" do we need a conclusion on our essay? If we understand why we do something, we are far more likely to remember how to do it. I also strive to keep the homework the work of the student. They do the work, I guide them to the correct (or at least best) answer. Students are more likely to remember how to complete the problem if they are in the driver seat, not the tutor. I am an 15 year IT professional, the last 3 with the University of Iowa. Most of my experience stems from my Bachelor of Arts degree at Wartburg College, Waverly, IA. As a Biology major, I have a good background in Life Sciences and Math. I believe in instilling a love of learning in the reader that lasts a lifetime. In order to achieve this I work hard to find books for the child to read that sparks a passion within the child. It is also very important to use books that are not too easy or not too difficult for the child. I also plan activities specific to the areas that the child needs to work on that are engaging and fun. I have two years experience teaching reading to struggling readers through America Reads. One of my students in this program went from the lowest reading group to the highest.
