I am a secondary math teacher. I use several different teaching methods in my classroom to ensure I reach as many students as possible. I also worked at Sylvan Learning Center until it closed. I tutored for all levels of math. I helped students at the elementary level with the learning program. I also did individualize tutoring for high school students who came in for homework help. I also helped with some college level courses including college algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. I did the ACT prep program as well as tutored for several other college entry exams. I have been trained in the APL teaching methods and am currently involved in Nebraska Mathematics Professional Development Series. I am currently in my second year of teaching. I hold a bachelor degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement as an Instructional Strategist I, which has enabled me to gain an understanding of the variety of teaching and learning strategies. In addition, I am a mentor teacher to two new teachers and I am working toward my Masters degree in Education. I love teaching and working with all learners. I believe all children can learn! I am a very laid back, easy going person. My teaching style typically incorporates both written and visual so there is something for all types of learners. The student has the answers, I merely guide or tweak those answers to get the correct expressions. There is always a way to explain a concept to get the underlying comprehension for everyone. I have extensive knowledge in the Sciences with six years of biology classes behind me. I have also tutored fellow students in Biology and Chemistry while earning my bachelor's degree. Practice, practice, practice. Math is not learned by watching, it is learned by doing. Some types of problems can be learned after only a few examples, others take much more time and patience. My role as a tutor is help guide students through a problem while doing as little of the actual calculations as possible. I try to make my students see that many problems, while different in appearance, are actually the same as ones they've already solved before. I always strive to get that "ah ha!" moment from my students, where they understand not only how to do a problem, but why we used that method to solve it in the first place.
