My comments on tutoring Chess : Introduction, Mastering the Pieces, Tactics, Opening Principals, Pawn Structure, Evaluation of Position, Endgame Evaluation.

"Chess lessons" are usually just that, chess lessons. I think that there are more dynamics to teaching chess than just moving the pieces. Most chess lessons for beginners, start with an introduction to chess. I teach this way too, but everything I am able to teach starts with respect. Every person should understand and accept that they will not always win. They must also accept that they may not always play their best. They must also respect their opponent. So often chess "coaches" forget about these key elements and life lessons. Tradition and culture are important to me and my style of teaching. With these few elements, learning is fun and the teaching is effective. Prime teaching focuses are: 1) Introduction to chess a) Learning the chess board b) Getting to know the pieces 2) Tactics a) Purposes of each piece b) Discovery 3) Strategy a) Opening Principals b) O ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a holistic, eclectic style of Teaching. When I work with any student,or students, I always determine what proficient level they are at.If they are having any problems grasping the subject, I must do diagnostic testing to remediate at progress from that point forward. When the student has reached a level of proficiency,he or she may move on to whatever subect,or level that pertains to. Yes, each student is unique and can reach their full potential under the right guidance encouragement, and support. Yet, I firmly believe that all students must master the fundamentals, no matter what subject.

Though teaching is not my profession, I have taught as guest lecturer in college level investment classes, as well as tutored one-on-one basic English reading to those unable to for LVA in the 90s. I have a BS in Accounting and a MBA in Finance. I have been working in the areas of Investment/Finance. I have improved my own ability to write effectively from the reading of poetry. In a written venue such as that, every word, space, and symbol has a purpose and meaning.
I believe it is easier for a student to learn when the topic being studied is of interest to that student. Thus, it is important to relate each topic to those things that the student most easily relates to.

My teaching style.... depends on the day, depends on the students, depends on the topic. One minute I can be dancing around the room and the next we're having a more serious discussion. My expectations are very high and I always push my students to do "just a bit better" than they think they can at that moment. At the end of the day, a lot of "just a bit better"'s add up to a whole lot! I wholeheartedly believe that each student has a potential that is limited only to their current experience--giving them new opportunities and showing them not only what they can do but what the world has to offer them... this can change a kid's life!
I have been teaching for 21 years now (wow, that's gone by fast!) and I love every second of what I do. I have also been a tutor in the district for the past 9 years, tutoring every subject possible--math, English, Social Studies, etc. I enjoy t ... read more

I have taught in many areas of study. Since I was young, I taught my younger family members the importance of manners, honesty, care, and responsibility. I believe this has carried into my real-life career as a teacher. I have taught at schools such as Hope Hall in Rochester, NY and Lemoyne Elementary in Syracuse, NY. There I helped my students with their basic subject courses during their class time period. I have taught dance at Kami's Kix Dance Studio which has helped me to gain stronger classroom management skills as well as gaining a thicker patience. I am currently attending SUNY Oswego and in 2011 will graduate with a BA in Childhood Education.

As a Financial Analyst at Fortune 500 equivalent company in the Republic of Zambia, I not only combined my mathematics expertise with strategy principles to execute my functions, but also I secured a part-time job as a mathematics tutor at a near-by university. I excelled at tutoring students in calculus, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and algebra – the subjects that I understand so well as a result of my majors in Engineering Economics and Mathematics in college. During the two years I tutored, students in my classes had the highest overall passing grades in mathematics, and most of them reported mathematics as the one class they liked the most and found to be the easiest in the exams. Most recently, as an MBA student at the Simon Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Rochester, I occasionally coached first-year MBA students in Statistics, Mathematics and Fina ... read more

I love working with people and teaching them about the things that I am passionate about. I am very patient and throughout and I have learned a lot of valuable techniques such as asking the right questions to confirm that the student has learned the lesson as well as planning out what the important points are that I need to cover. I also try to illustrate points using a variety of learning styles that over time I can customize to individual students.
Between my studies at Roberts Wesleyan College in the liberal arts field, where I earned a bachelors degree, and my studies in math and computational science I have an exceptionally broad knowledge base. My work experience further illustrates this having worked briefly as an English teacher in Prague as well as the various sales and customer service jobs I have had including Verizon Wireless, Wegmans, and Radio Shack.

I enjoy sharing knowledge with anyone who can benefit from my experience. I love mathematics, statistics and physics and I attempt to pass that enthusiasm to my students. I understand that there are many people who have trouble with math and science skills and becaus of that I try to explain technical concepts with easy to understand examples before submercing the student into computations that are difficult. I think that my best attribute as far as teaching goes is the ability to get the main ideas across to any student by giving each student examples that they can understand and feel empowered by their understanding.
While working on my associates degree I tutored pre-calculus and statistics. I also worked briefly with catholic charities tutoring all subjects for high school students in need. I then completed my bachelors degree while tutoring part time at SUNY Oswego and inde ... read more
