My comments on tutoring Political Science : I have vast knowledge of the political system.

I try to engage my student, to tease the learning out of him or her. I have learned to explain, to give the information then to step back, allowing my student to think through to the conclusion. This involves silence sometimes, and the student talking more while I talk less, something not so easy for a teacher of Italian descent. Experiences has shown, however, that it often works.
My name is John Calleri and I have been a teacher for more than 30 years. During that time, I have taught in two languages, English and Spanish, and in three countries: the United States, Germany, and Spain. I have taught Social Studies to grades 7 to 12, Spanish to grades 9 to 11, and GED (high school equivalency) to students aged 17 to 40. My students have been stateside Americans, newly arrived immigrants to the U.S., the children of our military in Germany, and native Spaniards in the Canary Islands, ... read more

My name is Robin and I have excellent teaching strategies for learning. I focus in on academic success, especially for struggeling learners. I have been teaching and tutoring for over 3 years now. I have done both resource base instruction and consult teaching with other teachers. Resource instuction is instruction done in small groups that works on developing skills, teaching strategies for stuggeling learners, and advancing already learned skills. Experience in the study of British and American Literature, also have made a study of History in America and Britain as well during undergraduate coursework. During my Master's I studied British Literature and was a teaching assistant. During that time I spent two years teaching composition and argumentation at Bowling Green State University to cover college level essay writing which required both classroom and individual tutoring outside of class. Subjects for that course included a wide array of topics with a focus more on structure and the strength of the student's argument than the content or theme of the paper. I can handle any topic of essay writing as a result and will be able to bring out the core structural and grammatical needs for the paper.

More About This Tutor...

The single most important thing about being a teacher or mentor is to be respectful, socially aware, and sensitive. Okay, that's three things, but they kind of go together. The second most important thing about being a mentor is to create understanding about the underlying principle of whatever it is he or she is learning about. Once you understand the underlying principle, the "how to" stuff becomes a *lot* easier to understand and remember. On the other hand, a person who's trying to learn the "how to" stuff without understanding the underlying principles is likely to forget key things, to be tripped up when an unexpected question arises, and to get into other trouble.
I've always been driven to help others understand subjects on a deep level. When I was in high school, I taught my brother basic algebra. (He was ten years old at the time.) As the editor of a high IQ society's ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Having recently completed my doctoral degree, I have a good grasp of what it takes to be successful academically. My degree required extensive training in writing, mathematics, and social science. I have experience working one-on-one with students and in the classroom. I have helped students with all aspects of writing essays and research papers from grammar and organization to research methods. I have experience assisting students in many areas of mathematics including algebra, calculus, and statistics.
As a tutor, my job is to take students from where they are to where they need to be. I can do this successfully for several reasons. First, I am patient. Often student frustration stems from classes proceeding too fast, and teachers lacking time to help slower learners. By patiently working with a student, I can teach at a pace that works best for them, overcoming much discouragem ... read more

I love opening up a child's mind to the love of the written word. The possibility of expressing one's private thoughts and experiences have the power to change lives for the better. I have always been patient and understanding with children. Some of my best memories as a child focus on that one teacher that went out of her way to see in me the potential , that I was unable to see in myself. I promise to do my best to ensure that your child feels the same way about one teacher making that deciding difference and bringing to light your child's potential.
During my tenure at Buffalo State College, I volunteered at the Equal Opportunity Program, where my main strength was utilized by actively tutoring students in the art of the english essay. I was able to tutor these students and advise them in the general format of the essay. We began by procurring a general introduction, or a s ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As an Academic All-American and SUNY Chancellor Award winner, I've always valued education. I tutored writing and englisg-related topics in college. I also was a state certified hunter safety instructor for two years. I spent 8 years teaching life and social skills to developmentally disabled adults and even was able to get one to craft his own poetry, which we both found very rewarding.
I believe the best teaching involves personal attention to that in which the student's interests lie. Helping a student to see how a topic can have impact on his life will make the course relevent and help engage the youngster. I also believe in encouragement at each step and making a "big deal" about each success. I see myself as a mentor who wants the next generation to be better than my generation - pay it forward.

I have been substitute teaching for 5 years. Within that time I decided that teaching was for me and went on to get my degree and certificate to teach. I have completed several long-term substitute teaching positions, picking up where a teacher left off, often times unexpectedly. I have taught classes in the elementary, middle and high school.
My philosophy is that education is power. Knowledge is our greatest defense and our greatest weapon. Through knowledge we gain experience, which enriches our competence, which protests the ills of society, which leads to a social justice, and most important, liberty. Learning is an activity that we should never stop, and if we do, we begin to die. I believe all children can learn given the appropriate avenues to success. Part of our job is to find those avenues and encourage our students to use them.

A Little Bit About Me...

I was recognized for my teaching abilities during my undergraduate years, having been selected as a teaching assistant as a freshman for sociology courses. As a graduate student, I spent much of my time as a teaching assistant and later as an instructor at the college level. I spent several years reading and evaluating statewide public school exams in science, math and writing, while helping shape the questions asked by state exam boards for primary and secondary school students. I became fluent in Spanish living and working in Central America and Mexico, as well as through immersion in Spanish speaking communities in the USA. I am a published writer and editor in nonfiction writing. I have also published academic papers.
I believe in finding methods appropriate to each student, depending on their level of development and interests. There is no simple way to help stu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of a SUNY school I had the pleasure of studying with people from all walks of life. I earned a Bachelor in History which I find vital for the development of our modern world. My writing skills have been developing since my High School studies and it only prepared me for my college writing assignments. I worked in South Korea for one year teaching and tutoring student ranging from 5 years to 16 years old children. I was responsible for setting up a daily curriculum and controlling the classroom.
The past year in Korea has opened my eyes to the enjoyment I can receive from teaching. It made me realize how wonderful American schools are in their understanding and development for children. I hope to cater to all the learning styles that children need so that they learn the information to the best of their ability. My goal is to have all the children understand all ... read more

I am very much invested in both structured and intuitive teaching. I consistently try to instill in my students a sense of the dynamic interplay between these two facets of the production and maintenance of knowledge. I encourage them to know the inside of "the box", but to be ready and willing to think outside of it when the situation demands it (as it very often does). I want my students to speak for themselves, but to be equally capable of listening. I view teaching as a collaborative endeavor, and it is my firm belief that both teacher and student are always engaged in both aspects of its cause. That is, we are always both teachers and students together.
I graduated from Rutgers University Cum Laud, and with departmental honors in English. After completing my undergraduate degree I traveled to Chile where I taught English at three private academies from grades 8 to 12. I ... read more

I attempt to get to know my students' interests and abilities at the outset of a class. I seek to utilize illustrative examples connected to their interests. Active participation in learning is my highest priority, because students retain knowledge and skills best by experiencing them fully. Because students learn in a variety of ways, I use activities in each class that access divergent learning styles: including visual, oral, and kinesthetic learning. I learn from my students through close observation. Also, I monitor nonverbal signals from students to guide me towards methods that are reaching students and away from activities that are eluding student attention and comprehension. I use praise and encouragement regularly to build confidence in my students. In the end, I measure my teaching success based on the degree to which students can independently apply the knowledge and skills ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Through my teaching experience, I have learned the importance of the relationship between the community and maintaining a positive classroom environment. As a student teacher I have had experience keeping parents involved with classroom activities and I believe that parental involvement is an important factor in creating effective teaching and learning for all students. Currently I am student teaching at Buffalo Public School #11, Poplar Street Academy. I lead small groups in the afternoon and use Harcourt Intervention to provide enrichment for struggling readers. I have been successful in pulling two of the five students up to benchmark level.
I also developed a positive behavior management system that teaches students responsibility and accountability. My system has reinforced my philosophy of teaching; students learn and work better when a positive environment surrounds them.
